I knew he was joking, but others maybe not so much.

I use this Tony F technique every week and it works very well.

Who’s Franssen ? Depending upon the cello’s projection (on a riser or not, facing into the semicircle or out towards imaginary audience), I might also be tempted to add a spot mic pair to it…or not ?

Here’s comparison with Sengpiel’s model, not that it necessarily carries weight….

I must confess that I have never tried that "pair in the midst of the ensemble" setup, rarely doing a recording for the recording's sake. But I can't imagine NOT having a hole in the middle with a pair at 1m (and no center mic, as in Decca Tree).

Even 67cm seems quite wide to me, typically using 34cm (or so) in front and above a quartet like the one in the illustration.

Faulkner was using 67cm omnis (usually M 50) long before he started using the 4-mic array.

Since studer58 shared that video where Tony is talking about 4-mic array I dared to ask about it. I'm new here and don't quite know how to start my quest;D I thought that since this thread is so fresh there might actually be people sharing their view on this.

Turns out out he was quite the pioneer in auditory psychoacoustic (‘localisation’) analysis. I’m drawn towards investigating the idea of ‘binaural fusion’ a little more.

Tony the Tiger! A genius.

I have been in his kitchen. For my visit he had set up 2 DPA miniature omnis on a bar with a really cheap preamp.

He was amused as I made a fuss over it.

Then for further amusement, Tony guided me over to a paper bag in the corner of the kitchen with M50's junked in it. They were for repair.

Tony has a great sense of humor.
