The ART Pro-VLA II is a tube driven Vactrol-based compressor/leveling amplifier designed for tracking, mixing, mastering, live sound, or broadcast situations. By using an opto-electronic design, (as opposed to a more typical VCA driven level detection circuit) the Pro-VLA II allows more compression to be added to an audio source with a more natural, musical sounding output and virtually transparent dynamic leveling. This VCA-less design coupled with a 12AT7 vacuum tube in the gain stage makes the Pro-VLA II an ideal dynamic control device.

...your 2 bus. I like the tried and true Art VLA for this job. Just remember to set it minimally and with a slow attack and long release time. Your tracks will have some character and juice without trying to drive the Mackie hard. Alternatively an old Aphex 700 multiband limiter can do nice...

The ART PRO VLA II is quite possibly the best piece of low end gear on the market. I read a slew of great reviews of this in Tape OP, so I dropped $250 for one. I immediately replaced the chinese tubes with NOS European tubes. All the reviews were spot on. I was astounded at how good this thing...
Hello, I was in the market for a decent yet inexpensive tracking compressor, and settled on the ART Pro VLA II based on it's generally highly-regarded status as a bang-for-the-buck low-end unit, and my initial impressions have been very positive. Some general impressions:
Love it as a vocal...
