Weathervane Multitracks - Secret Mountains

Hi everybody!

August was an off month for us this year, but we’re back at it now. A new episode of Shaking Through is on the way next Wednesday! The band is Secret Mountains, from Baltimore, MD. Secret Mountains was founded by guitarist Jeffrey Silverstein and singer, Kelly Laughlin. The recording of “High Horse”, produced by myself and Jonathan Low, and mixed by Jon, is shoe-gazey, vibey, mellow dream-pop. Kelly’s vocal was cut on our U67 using the D.W. Fearn VT2, The Manley Massive Passive and the UA LA2A. Check it out!

So see what you can make of this song before we post Jon's mix on this week. Again, It should be relatively straight forward, and really fun.

REMEMBER: Wherever you post this stuff, whether it's here or on Soundcloud or wherever, let's use the following naming protocol in file names, descriptions, etc, so we can keep this straight for posterity:

Secret Mountains, "High Horse" (YOUR NAME Remix)

Quite a quick job. Just moved into my new house and my monitor setup is.. err.. less than ideal.

Excuses excuses! Please let me know what you think anyway.
Cheers.

Good song, really mellow. I went for a John Lennon/Mind Games type of sound, and I think it's my best technical job, to date. I don't know if it's normal that the folder I got only had one tom track, but I got the job done, regardless.

Hi,

My attempt for the remix.

As for info this was done with a few exercises in mind.
1. limited time (3 hours)
2. Keep the original arrangement.
3. Minimalistic approach. (No of tracks doubled etc.)
4. No hardware.

OK guys, I took a different approach to this one. It was mixed primarily on a Yamaha PM1000 console (I usually mix ITB), and mixed down to tape. Summing everything out from the console really did something to the sound and character of things. I honestly wasn't expecting it to make much of a difference. I also got to play with a real Pultec EQP1A on this one, so now I'm jonesing for one of my own.

I thought this song was very dreamy and mellow, so I changed things around a bit to make it even more so. Please give me some critique on any aspect of the mix, I'd love to hear it.

Wow, more great sounding recordings for this month's installment... I love the drum room sound. I also love checking out the gear matrix, thank you Brian and Jon for sharing- very informative and it's wonderful to have well recorded material to practice on!

for my mix I used pro tools 9 and mixed ITB mostly using sound toys, waves, and stock plugs. Also used a couple of plugs from audio damage (dubstation and rattashack reverb). aux chains - drums (x2), guitars, vox, verb (x2), and mix sum. If anyone has feedback, I'd love to hear what you think.

Way, way too much bass and mud. Also the vocals are kind of cloudy.

thanks for the feedback-- I am a bit of a bass fiend.... I'm going to revisit with more attention to tightening up the low end, and a little more EQing for the vox...
cheers

One nice thing about this project is the possibility to hear and work on tracks recorded using a nice variety of gear.
For instance, since i' ve never had the chance to use any telefunken mic, is the harsh-ish top end (or at least both silky and harsh) on the overhead channels due only to the 260?
Or is it a boost on the manley?

Wizedo, I think that's one of THE most valuable parts of this resource is exactly that. You can hear the tracks in it's different stages, from tracking to final mix, and see how each element interacts in context. Individual sound clips are fine, but it's really about how it comes together.

I don't usually boost at all on overheads, and on the way in if the Massive Passive was in, it was just to hipass and cut some low mid. The Elam 260's are some of the smoothest condensors I've ever heard so maybe it was straight from the source. But then again, one man's harsh might be another's mellow.

Here's my mix. I would love to know what you guys think.

I also totally agree with wizedo. It is so great to be able to listen to the raw tracks for things that were recorded using gear that we might not be able to get our hands on. Helps you to hear why something like a U67 is so awesome.
