Quick question.....?

It is late. I am buggered. Ears are toast and I am wondering....

The CRUSH function on the C2...have you tried using that on two buss compression?

The reason I ask is that I dailed it in on a hard pop/rock track I am mixing and observed the following:

1. Upper mids and highs more detailed (2-4 db comp. max)

2. Lows were tighter but depthand real lows was lacking.

I did the following..

Eq'd the tracks with CRUSH on and compensated for rellative absense of lows.

Ended up with a more "dynamic/exciting" mix than when I had mixed with CRUSH off.

Deadline is looming and I need mixes to get back to Nashville for mastering next week.

I am second guessing my application of the C2.

Can anyone be kind enough to give me some application notes/thoughts/experience using the C2?

Would really put my mind at ease!

I 'just' have the SSL compressor (a fixed stereo model) it has no "crush" function...

(I am using it at the moment on my monitor mix while tracking at a bigger studio - to give me a 'vibe', but am also using a Smart unit to squash a Royer SF12 on front of kit / room duties... but that has no crush either....)

Anyone crushing something out there?

I like crush on drum loops! Doesn't work for me on mixes.

"Crush" shouldn't be called crush. It should be called (and can better be described as) "Turbo Compression", OR "compression amplifier" OR maybe "Smooth Pumper Helper". It also does that little eq thing you're talking about.

I'd do one mix without and one with. Also, if you have a tendency to mix on the "natural" side, then your intuition about using crush is probably overstated, whereas, if you tend to make things too slick, then layoff the crush.
