12 steps for Gearsluts

The “Gearsluts” 12 step program:
Many thanks to Davedogg for the inspiration and to Rick Hamming for "sponsoring" me and helping me find the courage to see this through. I feel so much better, now that I have this off my chest!

1. We admit we are powerless over gear purchases, and that our racks have become unmanageable.

2. We determine that a power greater than ourselves, like EveAnna, Rupert Neve, Alan Hyatt, and Sebatron is responsible for this.

3. We will make a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of Recording Equipment as we understood it

4. We will make a searching and fearless inventory of our gear.

5. We will admit to Mix Magazine surveys and everyone at gearslutz.com what equipment we plan on purchasing in the next 12 months.

6. We will be entirely ready to have equipment reviewers, sales reps and shills for OEMs make suggestions as to which gear we should consider for purchase.

7. We will humbly ask for at least a 30% discount. Dealer cost would be better.

8. We will make a list of all equipment we have slammed, knocked and put down and admit that while it is not what we want, it may be perfect for someone else’s use.

9. We will make direct amends to such people who use the gear we insulted wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. We will continue to take personal inventory of your equipment and when we are wrong about a purchase, promptly admit it.

11. We will seek through experience to improve our abilities with equipment as we understood it, striving only for knowledge of its uses for us and the recording chops to carry that out.

12. Having had ear training and gaining increased listening skills as a result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Welcome Zenith.

God grant me the technology
to upgrade the components on things that do not need to be fixed,
the courage to admit I use DIY gear in the face of Neve and Neumann owners
and the wisdom to know it sounds just as good...
(or at least doesn't hamper my ability to record a decent song)

service

I have had techs charge me for work not done. I once put a note inside the synth. I asked what color the paper was and he couldn't answer.

I have been on a downsize selling spree for months. This week two people walked in my studio and said man you have a lot of equipment. Seems like every 3 or 4 pieces of gear I sell i will buy 1. Its all over two buildings room to room to closet. Like one of those hoarder programs on tv I am sick. Now my wife is flipping out trying to rack things up for me. have lost touch. Sold some big tape decks, bass amps, and keyboards so I treat myself to some small rack gear.
GT.

No true gearslut would be happy with a 12 step pot. At least 48 so I submit by the laws of attinuation your whole program is flawed!

Yes. This thread's got a loose end.
The Tech thing:
I couldn't have exotic, sluttish kit without having a good, trusting relationship
with my techie(s).
Apart from using it, I take an enthusiastic interest in the workings of my (new) equipment; usually beginning long before any acquisition.
I have bought stuff with some vaguely known 'issue' with confidence. after having researched all the available 'knowledge-base' and discussing it with my tech.
I'll always provide him with all downloads of schematics, circuits -
printed out, along with the 'patient'.
Sometimes. something has to be sent off to its maker. I'll always try to discuss it first with the 'uncle' of the service dept there.
Always a rewarding conversation and they'll go the extra distance for you.
He'll know its every strength and weakness with some pride and enthusiasm.

As a bit of a slut, I can't imagine not wanting some real understanding of the gear's inner workings, and that interest and enthusiasm, seems the best place to start if it needs your techie's attention.
So. when you kneed an imaginative, 'bespoke?' solution to some studio problem, inform yourself, talk it out with your tech, and it'll happen.
They like the occasional treat too -- nuts and berries? -- or something else?
And change the newspaper regularly.
Cheers
