Should I buy a 2”??

I’ve used PT on every project since 1994. I moved from 4 tks to PT24 w/ an 882 to Mix. Meanwhile, running a 1/2” 16 track, then Sony PCM 800’s (DA88’s). I never had the “Big Analog” experience. It always seemed out of reach financially, I never thought my clients would pony up the extra dough for tape. I was happy being slick w/ PT. All synced up w/ midi flying and tape tracks running and PT sailing…very cool.

Now I’m older and thinking “Is it time to buy a big ‘ol machine, expand my services?” Every time I hear an analog machine it sounds good to me although my PT rig sounds good to me too. My thought was to rearrange my assets, sell my U47, maybe some other things and adopt an Otari or a older Studer. I don’t believe the 2” would become my everyday recorder. I plan on tracking to it when the customer agreed, then dumping to PT. One possible problem is that I’d have to monitor through the PT rig or thru the O2R.

I decided Not to upgrade my PT rig to HD. (For now). I began to be dismayed thinking that running my studio meant chasing technology up the bean pole of “faster, more wiz-bang, more bits, new operating systems…more, more.” I began to long for a simpler time when tracks were played well or re-played, when I didn’t spend my days hunched over my computer, staring into the edit screen…click.click.click. I’m guilty of editing bad performances, dicking w/ out of tune vocals, moving snare hits, copying the “good” verse. I understand that I don’t have edit. Sometimes it’s just easier if I do it, knowing or feeling that the “talent” is out of steam or unwilling to fix, or doesn’t hear the problem. Also I’m guilty of making the tracks “mine”. Once it’s in PT I can exert my will on the production. Usually it’s a good thing… my clients actually do trust me and they come back. It’s not all bad, I’m hoping to make it all better, for me, for the client, for the art of it.

I’m currently PT mix plus plus & a PCI farm, Apogee SE, a couple 888’s, Rosendahl running on trusty 9600.

I’m happy w/ my gear:

mic pres: V72(4), 1066(2), API 512C(2), Millennia HV3D(8), Manley VoxBox.

EQ: Massive Passive, API 560(2), BFE MK3(2) plus the Neves and the Voxbox.

Compressors: Alan Smart, Distressors, 1176, CL1B, TubeLink, Drawmer 241

Other: Fatso, H3000 (my favs!), Kurzweil KSP8, Lex 300, SansAmp, TC
Finalizer, Funk Logic Teleknobic Preampulator

O2R mostly just holds my keyboard and trackball. I use the midi faders to grab basic mixes in PT. I have AES and Adat cards in the thing, so I run lightpipe from the E4 sampler and bus things AES into PT. Also I find the talkback and cue sends still useful.

Mics: Geffell UM70s, 414s, RE 20, Royer 121s, TLM 103s, SM7, 57s, AKG 460, Senn 441, 421, Oktava MC012s, Beyer M500, M201s, M69s, Tele U47, U87.

Monitors: Quested 2108, NS-10, Tannoy DMT 12, ProAc, Bryston 4B, Panasonic boom box

Thanks for any input, +4 or –10
