hate is a very strong word - "dislike" would do the job better, imo,
but yeh: I'm not a fan of the mentioned tool either

The semi-fake laser "controller" thing is totally unnecessary.
But some people (me included) actually like this sound enough to spend hours replicating it on other synths.

I don't care so much for the sound, but I do want the 37-mini laser version of that.

All synth lovers born before 1970 absolutely HAVE to love the Laser Harp. Being born in 1969 it is just coded in my genes. Long live the Laser Harp!

i wonder what's worse — laser harp or air drums?
a harp with zero string vibration or drums with zero rebound?

That's like saying "I was born in the 30s so I absolutely HAVE to be racist"

That was an attempt at humor, but obviously I failed. Just in case though- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humour

What is there to hate? The instrument (which is just a fancy midi controller), or the sound (done on an Elka Synthex, possibly a preset)?

You can like or dislike one or the other, or both. Or maybe you just don't care for Jean-Michel Jarre?

JMJ for being slightly off rhythm in that tune, because he wants to play lasers instead of a real instrument..

The lasers for being one of the dumbest instruments ever, I dare you to post a compelling laser harp performance!

The sound is pretty dumb and overdone too (which I believe is a synthex preset indeed?)

Growing up, my mom loved those and took way too much inspiration from all of his scenes. She definitely kept you on your toes in our house hahaha. Coming home from school was just like Clouseau coming home and sneaking around trying to find where Kato was hiding haha.

Oxygéne IV (1976 on vinyl) sounded like nothing before; if anyone wants to tinker with lasers then good luck to them.

My sister has a cat called Kato, for that very reason.

Very aptly named animal.

I think you just don't understand it. You have to see the bigger picture.
JMJ gives pretty big shows. He is kindof disconnected from his audience and most people see him as an ant running around the stage.
The laser harp is a genius way to connect to the audience, to make a more concentrated appearance, to talk more directly to the audience.

The Laser harp sound was a sync preset on the Elks Synthex by Paul Wiffen.

In that infamous JMJ performance Paul Wiffen was behind a curtain playing the Synthex complete with cape and wizards hat.

It is rumoured that Charlotte Rampling was totally sick and tired of JMJ's midnight jams on his laser harp that she divorced him.

I'm afraid on this we differ.

Nikki Sixx flamethrower bass - now that's genius

Lasers that are demonstrably worse than the original instrument, so much so that the performer's timing is out - super lame.

There was a time when lasers were only something people at MIT and NASA knew anything about. You were lucky if you saw a concert that featured some sort of laser light show. To see someone have lasers on stage and then interact (play) with them was definitely rare and quite a thing back then.

Hating the laser harp is like hating that Kraftwerk just stand there or Pete Townsend doing windmills or Gene Simmons breathing fire. It is certainly a much better visual experience than just watching his fingers play a keyboard.

Sometimes nudists invade football pitches.

Sure it gets the attention of the crowd, but does that make it genius?

I guess on your point about technology, if it was a hologram of a nudist I might think "cool hologram" but it doesn't change the underlying premise (probably.. I mean I'm really stretching it here..)

If I saw a laser harp gig with off timing and lack of expression, on an at best and most favourably described as "powerful" synthex patch (I have a similiarly "powerful" purple paisley shirt), I'd find it super cringey. Even if quantum computing laser holograms were in play.

The other examples you cite, I'm not aware of it being to the detriment of the music like this (ie Simmons stands around playing very little bass anyway, at least when I saw KISS he was mainly fecking about!)

The laser harp was super cool until I learnt on GS that the sound is actually a Synthex and it's not even a VCO synth.

JMJ may as well use VSTs while he's copping out!

I'd be more impressed if he used VSTs in the 70/80s than lasers

It takes courage to perform in front of a crowd, and for Jarre to pull that off without laughing at the lunacy of 'performing' with that gimmick is commendable.

The other dude probably meant for his performance to be a cheesefest. There is no way that was a 'serious' performance...was it?
