Universal Audio Announces New Line of TDM Software Plug-Ins for Digidesign Pro Tools|HD

AES 2002, Los Angeles Convention Center, CA (October 5, 2002) β€” Universal Audio, a manufacturer of high-quality vintage audio hardware and DSP software plug-ins for digital audio workstations, today announced that they will release TDM versions of their popular Powered Plug-Ins. In addition, Universal Audio will be upgrading many of the plug-ins sold previously under the brand name Kind of Loud to support TDM HD and sell these new versions under the Universal Audio brand name. All the Universal Audio TDM plugs will support Pro Tools|HD and all will also support Apple Macintosh OS X next year.

Universal Audio's highly touted vintage compressor emulations, the 1176LN and LA-2A will be the first plugs-in available for TDM, followed closely by the Pultec EQ. Existing Kind of Loud TDM plug-ins that will be upgraded to support HD will include the Smart Code Pro surround encoders and RealVerb 5.1. In addition, Universal Audio has announced that two new plug-ins, a high-end reverb, DreamVerb and theCambridge EQ, will also be released as TDM /HD versions. Registered owners of existing Kind of Loud TDM products, will be able to upgrade to the new HD-compatible Universal Audio versions for a nominal fee.

"We consider the addition of the Universal Audio plug-ins to be a big boost to the Pro Tools platform," said Ed Gray, Digidesign's Director of Partnering Programs, "The quality of their vintage compressor and EQ emulations is indisputable."

Bill Putnam, co-founder of Universal Audio commented that: "Digidesign is the undisputed leader in the professional digital audio workstation market. The professionals who use Pro Tools|HD will appreciate the sonic quality and character of our plug-ins."

Universal Audio TDM HD plug-ins will begin shipping in Q4 2002.

I'm betting there's a whole bunch of behind the scenes here regarding Bomb Factory, Digi and UA. Did BF just lose the rights to the LA2 and 1176 name and graphics here?

My nose is twitching.

I never bought any BF stuff because it always looked like a vulnerable investment because of Erik's style... like it could breakdown with Digi at any time.

Folklore seems to say that the UA plug's are better anyway, anyone here compared them?

I'm really excited by this news and it makes HD look more appealing if they don't make it to Mix support. It's also good to see Digi do business with other hardware/software companies. The best of both worlds? with Digi? wow!!

Very interesting news. Any word if they're going to release native versions (RTAS)? Unfortunately I don't have the cash to make the HD plunge yet, and for software comps the BF 1176 and LA2A are sometimes the only thing that will get it for me. I have the Waves Platinum bundle and the Ren Comp is great, but sometimes ya gotta have that brit mode and I don't have the "real deal" (yet). I've been waiting for BF to release their next version to support WInXP, but this pretty much has closed that subject.
I'll be watching this with interest...........

Are there any plug developers who aren't doing TDM or VST versions. I'd figure Logic on the Mac with Digi hardware is the best way to keep the plug options open at the moment, but I believe there is talk that they might go with a Mac OS-X specific plug standard in the future. Dizzying, ain't it?

I do believe that once the TDM crowd gets a listen to the UA stuff on their own rig, BF will have a hard time of it.
