SPL Kultube

Hi

Demoed the Kultube and liked it so much I bought the company..well the unit anyway.

Has anyone else heard it, bought it, hated it....??

I didn't plan to do it I was thinking about getting the bombfactory plug-in's to help my compression capabilities. But it's good to have it.

Always good to have hardware though. I can never quite feel at ease paying so much for plug ins. I recently bought the waves masters bundle, and it's absolutely superb. I'm very pleased, but I do wish it all came in rack mount box!

I don't know. I tend to be wary of any gear with "tube" in it's product name. Also, any gear where you can actually see the tube probably isn't that good. Think about it...

Not "Highend"...really???!!! How awful, where's the box- it's gotta go?!

I found it more powerful and flexible than all my PT compression plug's and my Drawmer 1960. It is something I'll enjoy having for now and look forward to hearing better stereo compressor's in the future. It's a fun box.

Has anyone else actually heard one?!!!

I have an SPL Stereo Vitalizer Jack that I bought on blowout for $125. It's ok, I don't use it that often. But, a few years ago I had a BBE and didn't use it that often either.

The Tube Screamer is a little different. It doesn't have a tube in it. Besides, I said most things. Look at the dbx Silver Series gear. They have a yellow LED in the center of the tube socket so you "can really see that tooob working for you".

If it sounds good, then by definition it is good.

SPL do make some cool gear. I had a Mk2t here for a while on demo. It was great. The reason I didn't get one is because there was a massive cock-up with the distributer at the time, and after waiting for ages, I cancelled my order. The SPL stuff is not esoteric audiophile type gear, agreed...but it is a little different, and has plenty of situations in which it can make a difference.

I picked one up a coupla weeks ago. I am really impressed. I gotta agree with Jay that the fact that the word 'tube' is attached to the name is a bit discouraging, not to mention the fact that they put in a window to see the glowy thingy in there. However, if you can get past that, this is a cool box that is yet to suck on anything I've used it on.

It is not a tube comp. The gain reduction element is a proprietary discrete gain cell. The 'toob' on the output stage actually does add some really useful color to the palette though. On the mix bus, a little can be blended in very effectively. On a drum submix, it sounded ****in amazing turned up to 100%. It functions alot like a 'density' control.

The control options are wide ranging and well implemented. It has side chain access, a switch to monitor the side chain, a soft/hard knee select, as well as independent 'progressive time control' for the attack and release. This is one of the more unique auto attack and release functions I've seen (also one of the most tweakable I've seen). If you're interested, the manual has a detailed explanation of how it works.

If you have a chance to check one out, I strongly recommend it.

I haven't tried the Kultube, but I have their GoldMike preamp which is very nice on acoustic guitar, drum overheads and room mics, has a crystal clear sound.

So I think of SPL as quite a good company. I also know their Vitalizers, which I think are one of the nicest enhancers/exciters available, allthough I don't really like exciters.

SPL do have some expensive high end boxes, like that new mastering EQ they make. And they made some sort of surround mastering unit for Galaxy Studios (probably has something to do with the fact Ronald Prent works there, he has a good relation with SPL, but I think he's a good engineer too).

Hey Renie that's great!!!

I was contemplating picking one up.

It looked like a cool and flexible unit. It looked like a cool unit to strap a background vocal buss on.

I think after I get my checks from the Lollapallooza thing I may start looking for one.

I saw one on Ebay and may take a chance.

Good luck with it.

TTF.

almost 2 decades later and I'm still laughing at this comment. LOL.

Kultube will be legendary once you nuff nuffs catch up... and it will also be discontinued as of 2020

Here for the gear

I love it

I love our Kultube, especially on the mix bus as gentle inaudible compression and a little touch of tube shine from the tube stage...

Our Kultube lives here: https://facelinerecords.de

cheers
