USB Ext. Cables price - please tell me what I am missing?

I need to extend a USB 2.0 cable

Staples 10ft USB Extension Cable: $32.19 EACH

Monoprice 15ft USB Extension Cable: $1.85 EACH

WTF??? Am I missing something here, or....?

I bought a monoprice gold plated 15 ft USB cable to connect my laptop to D/A converter for like $2, seems to work fine.

Although I think USB 2.0 spec is 16 feet total, so if you are trying to extend 15 ft above an existing length you might run into issues.

The price difference would have to be that the cheaper cable is just a cable - while the more expensive one will probably have a re-clocker type thing built into the end of it.

A 15 ft USB cable will often have a signal reclocker thing on the end of it which pretty much allows you to connect multiple cables together to make a big long extension. I've connected 5 of these cables together without any issues - that's 75 ft!

Right - a re-clocker type thing ... right!

Yes, 16 ft is correct, but you can get around that with a hub.

I have bought cables from monoprice before, and have not had an issue. They seem to be good quality, so I am not concerned with another purchase from, them - it's just the price difference is overwhelming. Of course Staples is going to be more - but that much? 1,640 percent???

Don't sweat it. Get the cheap one. I guarantee you won't see a difference between the 2.
I bought one at future shop because it was all they had for like $30 an then immediately went to a local computer store and got the same thing for like $6. I returned the FutureShop one. Only diff is one has a stupid markup

cheap cables might be less durable (talking $1 ebay cables really) and you get a better warranty, but then if you break 4 $6 cables then you are still ahead

It's not news that box stores mark up cables to an astonishing price, but the more people are aware, the better.

Why bother with the cheap $32 crap when you could buy this:
AUDIOQUEST DIAMOND USB B-PLUG CABLE at Music Direct

Only $1459 for a 5m lead.

Somebody wrote that so it must be true, right?

Bigbox approach to cables should be like GC approach to strings. Sell 'em cheap, and get people into the store. Maybe have a few $100 platinum cables for those who think that's better.

This big$ cable policy always confused me.

Ever go to Bestbuy for a FW cable? Yikes!
