Queston regarding Figure of 8 mic techniques

I’ve mostly been using cardioid condenser mics for recording vocals, so please forgive my ignorance regarding figure-8 pattern techniques. My question is, what are the consequences of dulling the sensitivity of the rear(opposite side) of a figure of 8 mic with adhesive foam to help dull room sound? I ask this because I’m trying out a condenser mic that sounds awesome in Figure-8 mode, but because my room is less than perfect, I’m wanting to dull ambiance picked up from the rear of the mic.

I use a figure of 8 ribbon (R84) in my smallish tracking room. I have a 2'X2'X4" bass trap panel that I place directly behind the mic to keep out the room. Seems to work pretty well. I just screwed a couple of hooks into the top of the panel and I hang it off of a boom stand a few inches behind the microphone.

I don't think I would stick anything directly to the mic though.

Hope that helps ya.
