Midas XL 42 Need Info

I've Got a chance to buy the Midas XL42 as well as a Klark Teknik DN504 4 ch compressor.

Anybody have any experience with either of these (especially the Midas)?

What are they going for new and on the used market?

Mywindow of opportunity for the Midas is short.

Appreciate any help.

Ciao for now,

Your sign on name is almost as interesting as your real name.

So you need some information on the Midas XL42.....

I happen to own 4 of these baby's. Eight channels of XL42. I use them as utility mic pre/EQ's.

Klark Teknik manufactures them in their factory. In 2000, the MSRP for the XL42 was $2003.00 with a street price around $1300.00.

Klark Teknik also sells a version called the DN422M. The 2002 MSRP is $1628.00 with the same street price as the Midas. But I've seen them sell for less.

If the Midas you're talking about is in mint condition, $700.00 to $800.00 is a fair price for it. Anything less then perfect should go for about $450.00 to $700.00.

Keep in mind this is not a "Neve" style mic pre/EQ. It's a really good IC designed device. No discreeet circuit here.

IMHO, the Klark Teknik DN504 4 channel compressor is another "utility" type processor. It's not a "classic" sounding box, just a really good utility unit. The DN500, which is a dual compressor has better control then the quad version.

KT now makes an improved version of the DN504 called the DN504PLUS. It has new and improved VCA's, so you may want to think twice about buying the older model. The price better be great if you go for the older VCA's. The new and old version's MSRP was and still is $1397.00 with a street price of around $1100.00.

KT has blown out the XL42, DN422M and the old DN500, DN504, etc., to dealers, so better pricing should be available.

I hope this helped.

Midas XL 42

Midas has set a MAP price of over $6,000.00 for the XL 42 mic pre's. If you have them I would not sell them for anything less than $2000.00. Let's face it, a grand per channel for these mic pre's, is not bad at all. I have been a gear slut for thirty plus years and I can tell you that I have seen people talked out of gear for nothing, and then the same piece of gear go for a premium within a few months or even days. Fact is I did a Google search on the XL42 and there is not one dealer listing below 6k. MIDAS DOES NOT ALLOW IT! Don't give your cherished gear away!!! There will always be someone that will tell you it is not worth anything close to what you paid. Look on ebay and you might find them at a good price. I only paid $1200.00 for mine, from a friend, but that was before Midas came back to their dealers and set this much higher price. Are they worth 6k? Probably not. But if you are buying new that is what you will pay. dfegad

The DN504 very cool ..sold one many years ago to TLA...said it "spanked" the drums. Dont know anything about the Plus...sometimes 'improvements' change the sonic signature which made the original desirable.

btw...Tom had Chris buy one too.

I've had two. Tons of headroom. Very clean but the EQ has almost no character IMHO.
