frequEncies ?!? idea sharing

imagine you´ll get hired to do a job setting up the "sound" for a 5 piece band doing rock´n roll . ( gtr , bass , drums , vox & rhodes ) . the deal is , you´ll get paid a million bucks .
everythings set up ( mics , eqs , comps ) .
the bad news are , you just have 10 min time to do your secrect adjustments ... heh

what r u gonna do ???

Listen to them play. Then, maybe I'll adjust things after 5 or 10 minutes.

That's really an impossible thing do answer. Because, if the mics and everything are already properly picked and setup in the right spots you shouldn't have to do anything but press the big red button.

i knowed this is gonna be the answer

but ... i know from some experienced fohs ( ok thats a different story ) that sometimes they have to make their setup " blind " in fact of time during heavy rotation on festivals etc.
i proofed it once with imho a real good sound guy , he just came by took a drink and i told him to play around with my drum recordings .... that channels the bassdrum , heres the snare etc. i asked him to level the signals without hearing em and insert some comps etc.
it took him 5 min to bring my " doesnt sound that great drums " to a different sounding level .
matterfact he was done with the whole tracks in 15 minutes .
i asked him to mix some of my stuff ... but he hated studio work

i am rethinking my way of making stuff sound . i guess its a different story of what you hear " 4 real " and what you hear out of some monitor speakers in the studio . if there would be a way of captruing sounds 1:1 i wouldnt have a " problem " with it at all .
but not 1 microphone i ever had in my hands could capture the sound like i am hearing it for real . sure i can move it forwards backwards up and down andandand ... this preamp and thisandthat but still , its not the same compared to the " original " . its kinda boring if you listen to a vox ac30 over your speakers or you compare the energy if you stand next to it .
can it be a cable , maybe somethings wrong with the power , maybe its the digital clocking or ... tryingtryingtrying ... it gets better but its still worlds between .
" is it undoable " ???
theres where you pros come in . some of you probably have the skills and the know how " not how to capture the original " sound but how to make sounds work and useable during a production .
what to cut what to boost , to keep the bottom and the energy without losing the image of space .

yesterday i was listening with cans ( real low ) to f.ex jonny lang

i love his records , but if i compare f.ex the vocal sounds or the guitars , basically anything to my sounds i am recording , they sound real tiny . its hard to tell but the guitars f.ex sound like they were recorded with a 6" speaker which i dont believe basically . if i turn on my marshall and put a sm57 or whatever in front , you " cant see " the amp . its just all over the place .

maybe some of you know what my " problem " is and have some ideas how to change that , i am willing to learn and i know you guys know how to ROCK

Someday maybe we will have direct output from our brains to tape. Professional "listeners" will go to a concert and we will be able to hear what they hear.

Until that day comes we are only approximating the experience of sound. I have always felt that recording is really not so much "capturing" sound as "translating" it to another form- tape or disk. We have to work real hard and use all the tricks.

i think one problem here is while LIVE sound guys know ALL the frequencies they are working with, studio folks arent so 'into the numbers'. (At least I am not) In fact my worst nightmare is engineering for a 'live sound guy / producer' because they can tend to 'call out the numbers' instead of using descriptive language...

I must have had a bad experience with one...

"Please remove 3 db of 5.3K on the vocal"

Me - er.. looks at desk, thinks "where the f**k IS 5.3 k ANYWAY"! ... finds it, thinks "how much is - 3db on these knobs, (looks at desk) - OH, THOSE marks are the AMOUNTS!... Ah... interesting! (is that a 5 or a 3???) Finally to producer - "OK! How's that sounding?!"

Anyway - perhaps thats why few folks responded... I dunno..

wow , i really thought that most of you guys are thinkin & workin that way .

you wanna make it sound like this ... you need to do it like that .

putting the puzzle together is a different story and i know theres no general rules for doing it " right " . but coming back to the main point , i guess theres not that many different opinions in here about what " sounds good " & what doesnt .
we all agree on that the root of a good sounding recording is the performer . we all agree that a good room and good gear is improving the quality of the recording .
what i guess :
1) i have a lack of basic knowledge about instruments & their main frequencies ,
2) i probably missed some " must " know informations about using dynamic tools right ,

i basically like those philosophical sentences like " trust your ears " ... but ... how can you trust if you maybe arent trained to realize the faults . do you hear if its major or minor ? do you hear if its dorian or phrygian ? do you hear if its mixolydian#4 or hm 5 ? if your not trained to hear it ... YOU CANT TELL ... impossible .

if nobody would have told me how to tune a guitar i would never figured out a way by myself "how to do it right" .

so maybe any information , even if you think " everybody knows that " may help me to improve my sound and music . thats all i am looking for .

sorry yall , but i have to ask
