I must be the only one who has a problem with recording sting rays..

The player needs to be top notch or the top end pokes out in the mix too much, definetly not for people with no technique..

Anyone have problems with way too much low end from the active models? I can deal with the passive ones, but the last active one I had to record I ended up using a sans amp for a DI with a shelf at like -6 at 250 or so and running it into a krank guitar head with a lot of dirt to smooth out the mids and top end.. I was still sucking out more bottom out of it in the mix. The mastering engineer also had to run a low mid compressor out of tc6000 very hard to keep it under control..

The band had two of the basses and both sounded the same, so there wasnt anything wrong with it..

Give me a vintage P bass any day.. Also love the grabber, just please dont bring me a sting ray..

Wow.. I must be the only guy who finds the stingray to the THE most UNversative bass in existance :/

I love their sound... but they are a one trick pony. I could never bring myself to buy one (as a bass player or a engineer) because they lock you in too much in terms of tone.

Hence I went for one of these:

A G&L SB-1 Custom.

Flexibility out the wah-zoo. Tone out the ying-yang, and playability up the jibber-jabber

I also track using a Sansamp Bass Driver most of the time. 90% of the recordings I do are very "live", so I find that the spill from the other mics int he room make up for the lack of a mic on the bass cab.

anywho.

I feel the same way as a bassist. It's awesome at what it does but that's about all it does. I personally prefer a Brubaker for versatility and the way it plays. In the hands of a good musician a Harmony will sound decent, though.
