Ribbon Mic Recording Noise Suggestions

Hi All,

I don't do a lot of posting but I certainly appreciate all of the great information here. I had a quick question that I was hoping someone could shed some light on.

I had a session today where I was recording myself playing a somewhat quiet acoustic song. I wanted to test out micing from a distance so I did a mid-side configuration about 5 feet in front of me with a Fathead ribbon and a cardiod Oktava MC - 012. They both went into a DAV pre ---> PBC 6A ----> Metric Halo 2882.

I set the DAV pres one click before max gain for both mics and I added about 10db of gain from the MH 2882 for the ribbon mic to get it up to level. The compression settings were modest (1-3db). I had the output gain knobs of the PBC 6A at about 2 O'clock for both mics.

Anyways, I really liked the sound but the fathead channel had a lot noise. I was wondering if anyone else has used the fathead with the DAV on quiet sources and experienced an issue. Or if I should be backing off the DAV gain and adding more from the MH and the PBC 6A. The gain on the Oktava was the same and wasn't noisy at all so I assume that the DAV can be one click below max and not be very noisy.

Sorry for the long post - any help would be appreciated!

A.

It's worth trying the experiment you propose, may be better.

It can be a pain to record quiet stuff with a ribbon if you don't have a pre with a lot of clean gain. If you have some money to blow on a new pre, check out the AEA TRP. LOADS of clean gain from a preamp made for ribbon mics.

Impedance is another important factor that can really help ribbon microphones. The TRP again is a good example because it has a very high impedance along with clean gain. Cloud microphones makes the Cloudlifter. This would be your best option to start out with. It gives you around 20db of clean gain and a nice impedance bump. It also can work wonders on dynamic mics. Just keep in mind that it needs phantom power to run but will not allow phantom to reach the mic (It's great for ribbon mics and dynamics, but you can't use it with a condenser.).

Give the cloudlifter a try, but also consider the TRP if you have the cash. I remember the first few sessions tracking ribbons with the TRP, it was a whole new world!

Btw: thanks again for the helpful replies back in the day!

I now have a couple of cloudlifters and a royer dbooster that I use with my ribbons.
