Do I really need a AD/DA converter?

Hello friends,

This is my first post on gearslutz.com and I'm reaching out to all you experts for your help.

I currently using an iMac 21", Pro Tools 10 and the MOTU 8pre interface. I'm wondering if I would need an AD/DA converter to go along with my setup and some knowledge as to how to set it up.

I have a small home recording studio so I'm aware that the level of production that I want will not be at a professional studio level but I would like to get the most out of my studio and I've heard that I need and don't need an AD/DA converter.

What are you're opinions?

Thanks for helping me out!

The MOTU is an AD/DA converter.

Thank you bonestar.

I was told that is was and I'm just wondering if the MOTU has excellent converters or I should invest in something better. I'm trying not to brake my bank account either.

While there are certainly better converters, my opinion is that what you have is pretty good, and if you were going to invest, do it at the mic pre level first. That will dictate 90% of your sound, the AD/DA is really only another 10%. and the difference these days between the cheap and the expensive AD/DA really is splitting hairs.

You can make excellent recordings with the MOTU. Money would be better spent elsewhere at this point, I suspect.

Do you have any suggestions as to what kind of mic pre? Would you suggest an external or a plugin mic pre?

I think my budget would be around $100.00 - $500.00

I'd suggest using the ones in the MOTU for now. Once you've been recording awile, borrow or rent a better one and you can decide if it makes a difference.

No such thing as a plug-in mic pre. It's an amplifier to bring your mic signal to line level - i.e. necessarily hardware.

Agreed - sorry to be unintentionally condescending but don't learn to run before you can walk. Use what you have until you get to understand the basics of what you're doing. Then think about how you want to change things; at that stage you can ask people how to get "that sound".... sometimes it'll be source, sometimes position, sometimes instrument and OCCASIONALLY its equipment.

Be done with it and get the mic pre by warm audio wa12.

High gain with cinemag transformers all for around 499usd.

This will add a little oomph and character to your vocals, keys, bass etc.

Great reviews and best pre at even twice the price.

Cheers
