Pseudonyms in Mix Engineering

What are your thoughts on using stage names (not pseudonyms, sorry) for album credits?

Kind of silly. I've heard of musicians using pseudonyms on album credits because their contracts prevented them from working on published projects other than their own (like Jimmy Page on Roy Harper's "Stormcock," I think he went by "S. Flavius Mercurius" for that album).

I could see using a fake name if the artist wanted you to do a really bad mix, but at that point you should either just drop the project or ask not to be credited. Or do a "Mix by_____, Mix engineered by______," to save your name.

I just feel if you`re unwilling to put your name on something, then you should seriously consider why you`re doing it in the first place. Same goes with most people on these forums hiding behind avatars... step up and show your name and face.

you mean like pick a good one, and stick to it like it was your "stage name"?

I always thought Bob Rock's name was a nom de Mixage. Imagine my surprise to learn that's his name.

Those aren't pseudonyms. It's their "stage names". A pseudonym is when you stay anonymous (or at least publicly).

So are you asking about pseudonyms or stage names?

I think there are some things that need to be "Alan Smithee" projects. They don't start out that way necessarily.

how about Flood? He's an engineer.

What I want to know is did Mr. and Mrs. Beatz really name their son 'Swizz', or is his real name something like "Robert Beatz"

Got a good name? Use it! Someone give you an amusing/memorable nickname that everyone calls you by (a la flood as mentioned above)? Use it! Got the same name as a well known engineer/producer? Might be worth using a slightly different variant...

Anything else - isn't there bigger things to worry about? No-one ever hired a producer/engineer because if their name, although if your name is particularly ordinary, it might be worth thinking about.

I'm very lucky in that my real surname is kinda unusual, so people remember it. I'm not sure how much that's helped though.

Overall I think it's a bit like personalized registration plates on your car - it can look über-cheesy!
