Pushing the faders of instruments in that area a little further than I would normally do, boosting specific frequencies in that area on instruments that need this (i.e. emphasizing 2k on one synth and 4k on another - just enough to differentiate them better from each other) and making sure that the arrangement contains instruments in the 1k-5k area.

I recently learned/practiced a new technique.
Adding a parallel track with only white or pink noise with a synth
to add presence on any synth sound.

a little pink noise modulating oscillators on an analog synth does wonders for me. Or I use a tape delay, which has that beautiful hiss.
