The Stereo Mic Thread - master list

In recent times it's occurred to me how useful a good, compact stereo mic is.

Physically, you can get a small stereo mic into spots that you might not be able to get a pair of related mono mics into.

As well, good stereo mics benefit from the capsules truly being as close together as possible for excellent phase, often it can be difficult to get capsules as close as ideal when setting up a pair of mono mics for stereo.

So... I'd like to review some of the existing, excellent, stereo mics and create a master list here.

Some good ones I'm aware of:

The Schoeps CMXY 4V
-small diaphragm condensers
-dual cardioid only
-XY only
-adjustable angle

Schoeps CMXY 4V info

The Neumann USM 69 i
-large diaphragm condensers
-adjustable polar patterns on each capsule
-XY or MS
-adjustable angle

Neumann USM 69i info

The Royer SF-12
-ribbons
-dual figure-8 only
-XY or MS
-non-adjustable angle

Royer SF-12 info

Keep `em coming!

Coincident figure 8s offset 90ยบ, like the SF-12, is called a Blumlien pair.
I haven't used that specific mic, but I really like the technique.

Pearl DS60 -- twin capacitor mic with two outputs for each capsule so you can adjust polar pattern in post production.
Pearl MS2CL and MS8CL -- fixed M/S mics

AEA R88 and Coles 4050 are two more stereo Blumlein ribbon mics.

There are quite a few historical models that are no longer available new but worth investigating as second-hand options, do you want to include those?

There are also quite a few mics of far Eastern origin based on the AKG C24 or the B&O/Spieden/Royer stereo ribbon design.

Always wanted to try the Soundfield SPS422 stereo mic in a studio
SoundField: SPS422B Microphone System

btw, I think it's slightly disingenuous for Schoeps to refer to their CMXY 4V as an "XY" mic...the capsules aren't truly coincident on the horizontal plane, which means there will be some interaural time difference. But it's definitely compact!

I've used the Schoeps MSTC 64 U which is a one-piece ORTF array, that's pretty badass.

Don't know if the Schoeps CMXY 4V is for sale any more (according to reps in USA).
Still love the Schoeps Stereo MSTC 64g ORTF for easy quick setup

Rode NT4 is a great workhorse. I still use it a fair amount for overheads and acoustic guitar. Aside from that, throw some batteries in and plug it strait into your iPhone when you need to record something mobile. One of my all time favorites!

The AT825 does great foley/live room/field recording in a pinch; with its built in x/y SDCs, I've recorded improv so usable it ended up on an (indie) film soundtrack. A perfect companion for the for Zoom H4N, too, if that's your bag.

Got a Nevaton MC48 that sounds lovely, detailed, yet smooth, and warm. Also sounds good on vocals!
