Weird smacking noise on Apogee Duet?

So I picked up a Technics SL-Q200 turntable (free, from a family member - hell yeah), replaced the old rotted Grado cartridge with a AT92E, and plugged it up to my Apogee Duet's instrument ins, ran it through Logic, and applied the RIAA curve correction and listened to a few records and it sounded pretty alright. I decided I was going to buy a phono preamp anyways to get rid of a little hum problem, but there weren't any noticeable problems aside from that. A few hours later, I open Logic back up to spin some records and turn input monitoring back on and notice a really weird, persistent smacking noise. I recorded it and it wound up turning into a hiss towards the end. I don't understand what this is. Anyone have any insight? It's only when the instrument ins are selected, when I unplug the turntable it's way quieter, but if I crank the gain I can still hear it. I don't get it...

Here's the recording:

I had a similar noise on my duet plugged into my macbook pro. It turns out it was the 3 prong power extension on the macbook pro (I plugged in the 2 prong adapter and the noise went away

So it's a grounding issue with the computer/interface combo.

Interesting... Weird that the third prong, the ground... would cause grounding issues. I'm gonna give it a shot not plugged in and see if that might be it. If so, I have a two prong somewhere I can use.

You created a ground loop. The duet is bus powered and ground reference is dependent via USB connection to the computer.
