Distorted Guitar PREAMP comparison

So, what's your favorite preamp on distorted guitars?

I did a little shootout with different mic pres for distorted guitars. The contenders I used were:

1. Amek 9098 (2 channel 1U version)
2. API 3124+
3. Classic Audio Products of IL VP26
4. Sytek MPX-4A
5. Vintech 473 (switched to 300 ohms)

I'd like to know what you all like for pres on distorted guitar or which you prefer in this test. You can download the files below.

Enjoy!

Probably not a lot of responses as people may not be a style the viewers know/appreciate. They all sound about the same to me, but it's not my genre.

In the future, it's sometimes helpful to mask the brands of the pre's and reveal them later to avoid having people be biased by brand names. Make them listen with their ears instead of their eyes.

Ya, I thought about that. I figured people could rename the files if necessary. I totally hear what your saying though. Bias always skews the results.

Yes, Burl B1 and Vintech 1272 are my favs over here. I've actually also gotten fantastic results with the pres in my Profire 2626 after being modified by Blacklion. They sound fantastic.

The differences are hard to tell with a dist.- guitar.
If its a single instrument I made the experience that I hear more differences if it is a solo performance e.g. classical guitar player.

For example my Neve 1073 gives the root note a more powerful color, it sits better. Your guitar is already full of harmonics, it is hard to tell waht is going on there. I had the feeling that some of the files have more high-end when you go into the higher register.

You might will find one or the other better in the context of a full mix.

I can live with two choices in overdubbing.
I own the 1073 and a more modern tube concept - the SPL Channel One.

Choose what you like and limit the choices -!!

I have yet to hear a Burl pre. I'd love to get my hands on one. I hear nothing but good things.

It's all subjective of course, but I would tend to say a distorted guitar is a great way to try out pres BECAUSE of the full frequency spectrum they represent.
You can really hone in on where the areas of power are in a pre.

Obviously you won't get much in terms of listening the the "speed" of the preamp (although the Vintech did seem more sluggish than the API to me)

Lets use your example of acoustic guitar. With this, performer is constantly moving millimeters to inches away from the mic position which is skewing the results.

I don't know am i getting too crazy and splitting hairs?
