Big orchestral stabs: how to do them in production ?

Those big orchestral stabs in following song examples:

- 'A view to a kill' by Duran Duran
- 'Forever More' by Moloko

etc..

How are these sounds done ?
I guess Duran Duran sampled some bits, but what are the sources ?
And where did Moloko got this sound from ?

I would really like to know.

Umm... Get a string section and record them?

Seriously though, I'll bite since I just made a beat with orchestral stabs in it the other day. I know what you're sriving at- The sounds out a rompler/keyboard can be thin, or sterile, or "too big" or whatever (I've got a Roland G6. The best of the worst? Who knows... ). But anyway, I took a different approach to this track. I found some deep cello stabs in a sample pack I've got, nothing really special, and cut up some hits. Stretched and pitched them around a bit. STILL not "big" enough at all... so I think I stacked an ungodly # of plug ins on the track... problem solved. HUGE strings. Maybe something like that would work for you too?

stack everything you have, cellos, violas, violins, cymbals, timapnis, horns.
the sound need a lot of attack so as it sounds in the moloko tune staccato.
a rhythmic phrase/voicings. if you want to emulate a whole orchestra you need a lot of sounds.

but for what ive heard 20 tracks and you should get some impact.

sampling and layering helps making it more realistic ... might not be legal.

The 2013 way: Go to Google.com, type in "orchestral hit sample" and press the looking glass button....

Back in time all samplers had orchetral hits in their libraries
