Fostex Studio Monitors?

I'm looking to upgrade my Mackie MR5 (MK 1's)

Fostex 8" 3-way Studio Monitor (Pair) | Musician's Friend

These are on sale for $349.99 and I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about these if it's worth buying. If not what are some studio monitors under $800 you guys would recommend?

I was looking at those too. Apparently, what started off as a deal on the 8" monitors at $349.99 morphed into a deal on the 6" at $299.99 as stock ran out.

Still a bargoon, depending on what you are after. Not much info out there on these.

I'm not expecting much at all...maybe they'll end up in my kitchen...

But ya never know!

Monitors just arrived.

I'll be comparing them to pretty expensive hi fi dipole Orions, and higher end closed box Linbrooks, so...

We'll see what happens!

I don't know anything about those speakers, but I do know a lot about Fostex in general, mostly that In Japan they warkt mich higher end stuff than we usually see here, particularly when it comes to mics and speakers. For instance they have made...don't kbow if they are right now, excellent ribbon mics, and in the past some very respectable monitors. Based on what they sell here I'm not surprised the expectations are pretty low, but they do have the capability of making a good pro product.

They're not terrible monitors, at all.

The bass is actually nice. They're pretty smooth over all, and the detail isn't bad.

If I had to guess, I'd say they have less harsh highs and more focused bass than the Mackie 824s.

Easier to listen to. Since they are actually a 3-way monitor, I think the crossover treatment is better.

But I haven't heard them back to back with the 824s (which I can't deal with, at all).

The Fostex 8" 3-way does have adjustment for both bass and treble (tweeter, I'm guessing).

Where the Fostex falls short, IMO, is in imaging, overall punch and real tweeter detail,
but I'm not sure how you obtain these things in a lower end speaker.

I really haven't heard any monitors under a few thousand dollars (minimum) which contain all these elements.
