Anyone have any plans for DIY racks?

I am getting ready to expand from an 8 space rack and wondered if there was any reason I couldn't just build my own. I am pretty handy with the tools. Anyone got some ideas?

I have yet to read anything but rave reveiws about the Seventh Circle Audio preamp kits. While they're not cheap, they are very inexpensive comparitively if you're good with a soldering iron.

I don't have any myself but I plan on remedying that soon.

I think flail 19 is asking about 19" wide studio racks, not a rack for a 500 series pre amp. If that is the case, I would like to get some plans too.

BTW, I did find this place after doing a search on gearslutz.

you can get 15% off if you stain your own racks and the prices are great. I wonder how the quality is?

Part of the bigger picture, turning a sows ear into a silk purse! I'm basically trying to make my Mackie Controls look like a proper desk!

I've got another rack to duplicate the other side to replace the concrete blocks and a few trims and stuff around the centre desk and a top to stretch across the whole lot.

Hopefully get around to finishing it next week time permitting and I'll post a picture.

Check stevep's studio build thread-I am pretty sure Neiltdeal posted the CAD layouts for the racks he built for him. They looked darn good.

Ted,

That is where I am going. Until I can afford a D-control I may be integrating a Command-8 into a desk like that. Good job!

Ted... those look awesome. I did a custom top for my Mackie controls, but it was a little simpler, and set up so my two LCD displays and the Mackie controls would look one big crazy hi-tech thing (inspired by the huge Logic booth at NAMM a couple of years back when they introduced them).

I built a pretty big angled double-wide rack and all I can say is... measure everything a million times, and reinforce it a lot (2x4's endwise hidden inside, held in by a bunch of huge drywall screws).

Do the cement blocks help you get a more solid low end?

There's enough audiophile myths about without starting another one

DIY Rack

Here's a link to a rack I built last year that I modeled after an Argosy Spire 7142 2 bay rack. The link has pictures of the building process and pdfs of the Visio files I used to design the rack.

DIY Rack

The finished rack:

Set up with some gear in it:

I found this site helpful for building your own racks.

I did some stuff differently but got some great ideas from the site.

Good luck.
