The Beatles - Neumann U47 or U48 (except for some session in studios other than Abbey Road, for example a U67 was used at Trident Studios to record the vocal for Hey Jude).

Rolling Stones - mostly a U67 as on Sympathy for the Devil. There are photos of some Exile on Mainstreet sessions (the ones in Los Angeles at Sunset Sound - mostly overdubs) where they are using a U87.

Frank Sinatra - classic Capitol records from the 1950's used a U48 which is still owned by Capitol and in service.

John Lennon - Double Fantasy sessions - Neumann U67

Stevie Wonder - Superstition and most of his classic 1970's records - Electro Voice RE20.

Paul McCartney - Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey - EV RE-20

Billie Holiday - most all of her records - Neumann M49

Norah Jones "Don't Know Why" - Neumann M49b

Mixing Coldplay Live | On Tour With Coldplay

Also, i know Kelly Clarkson used a C800G on her "All I ever Wanted" or "Stronger" Album. Also, used by Mariah Carey and R. Kelly. I will dig up which songs.

i think it's better if we keep this to studio tracks. live setting is different, and 360p youtube videos don't really help getting the feel of a mic

For sure. I agree. Nice work invalidusername! You should be proud to embark on a summary like this. Some folks, like myself, dig info like this as it paints a nice overall picture of how/when/why when it comes down to approaching a voice with a mic. Also, is educational in terms of helping keep budgets when looking for the mics. It's a very realistic summary.

possible correction on Alanis... seems it could be just C12 and not C12VR even though Glen Ballard used C12VR extensively during that period...check this article
Glenn Ballard

Also, The Matrix (Avril Lavigne - Complicated, I'm with You, Sk8ter boi) used a Neumann U87-Neve 1272- EL8 Distressor-Apogee AD8000

If I remember correctly, they said in Behind the Glass -book that it was indeed classic AKG C12 on Jagged little pill.

thanks ! yes, it's good to have some concrete examples in a sea of ramblings...

i'm actually looking for a vocal mic, so it helps.

of course, the preamp, the compressor, the EQ, the tape (or digital converter) all have an influence on the sound. and every singer is different.

i've found a few more on the Sound on Sound website

If this really is to be "The Ultimate List", Gearslutz had better rent some extra data space.
Nah, brave attempt, actually.
But I do think some sort of index system may be needed soon.

yeah, the title is a bit pompous, sorry about that, it's just so that it gathers attention. i have no intention to dedicate my life to this thread

actually there's enough data here to get a good idea of the sound of the most used mic. but it's fun so keep em coming.

i'm adding all the ones i find !

i've highlighted the fact that Bjork has pretty much always used a SM58 (into a Digi001 for Vespertine), to remind us the microphone doesn't matter much.
