Flea 47 with a Beeznees K7 into a an Olympic 65 Germanium pre. Closest thing I’ve heard to a pristine 47. It’s beating my Voxorama at the moment but I have a new K49 capsule for that.

A lesson in the living room

The "vocal" mic I've been using this evening is a DPA 4015. I'm not kidding: they really do sell that sub-cardioid capsule in one of their stage vocal mics. Pop off the wind screen and you'll see it. My plan today was placing a single mono mic as a practice aid in my cello corner. I love my OC818 generalized M/S rig, and I've figured out how to make it work well in my untreated living room, but it's simply too much to set up just to run Q/A on something I'm practicing. I need something that I can put up and leave for a day or two without having a giant boom stand occupying half the floor area. Out comes the DPA 4015C on a small footprint Tama mic stand. Should be perfect... once I figure out where to place it. Got my 744T, got my 7506 cans, so let's go.

Damn, these DPA mics really make you work for a living! It can't be over the music stand because I can hear comb filtering. It needs to be behind the music desk, but not too far behind, given this is an untreated room. What's this megaphone sound? My cello doesn't sound like that and a know a DPA mic doesn't; must be placement. I guess it's a ceiling/floor mode and start adjusting the stand height until it goes away. Now too much C string and the A string doesn't sing. Change the aim in azimuth by 4 degrees; fixed. Now mess with the elevation angle until it stops sounding covered. (Aiming it at the bow contact point does it.) No wonder your typical amateur never gets a good take in her bedroom: the worse the acoustics, the better you need to be at mic placement.

Once it's all dialed in, I play some Faure. First impression is I sound like a total klutz with a bow. Jeeze, David, do you even know to play this instrument? And you're not very expressive, BTW... wait, that's the hint: I pop off the cans and realize I've been forcing the sound because my headphone level is too low. Raise it a few dB and suddenly I can play again. There's a lesson for the next time you're doing string overdubs.

Wow, where did the time go? I was supposed to be practicing and now it's time to get ready for bed. Hmm, I guess I was practicing... just not the thing I'd planned to practice!

Recently acquired 1964 U67 first time on vocals. Has been sitting on acoustic for a stretch. I’d like to say more about this mic, it’s incredible pedigree, etc. but I’d have to kill you.

Also, sounds pretty much like my RI67.

Tried a few mics out today but the RCA 44 ended up winning. Sometimes that mic rules on vocals!

Once again, the two mics that shone were the @ serrano S87 and the @ Heiserman U47 recreation. And they were used to capture great performances.

An SM58 into a GAP 73 Premier, but this time using the 600 ohm switch on the pre as has been suggested previously here.

Verdict? It really is an improvement! Surprisingly smooth, and malleable with EQ.

I’m still feeling sad about Andreas so I put a Neumann K49 in the Voxorama with the vf14m and now it sounds even more like a NOS U47. It’s a treasure. RIP.

Despite being (sometimes) a rather bright/cheapie LDC.
Usually $100 or less used in the US.

IMHO this is a nice "one take" Baritone capture of an 'ol CCR song.
Translating it from John Fogerty's (incredible) Tenor.

AKG 200 Perception here.
The AKG mic's 300 Hertz Low Cut on

Not afraid to leave it on a warm day, in the car.
Good for travel practice.
Chris
EDIT: Added an OUTSIDE "one take". In front of a fave coffee shop. Beautiful day.

Am feeling more confident regarding 58/AirButton/Soyuz Launcher chain.
Sometimes I like a dynamic for punchier leads.

Thanks! I know it could use a little de-essing, but I'm liable to overdue it!
BTW that was done in a noisy coffee shop's,
small conference room.
Music over the PA, and loud conversations outside the room.

Proof yet again that if somebody can't get a decent sound out of a 57 or 58 it ain't the gear.

The 57/58 does like transformers and lower input impedances but even more important is something good happening in front of it as well as understanding proximity effect and a adding a bit of eq to open it up a bit (in this case your 4k button).

Postscript...
IMHO one of the best (few) bargains left, in this crazy Post-Pandemic/under $100 world is_envelope please...

The AKG D770/D790's.
Hadn't taken my D790 (yes I have a 2nd back up one! ) out for a while. Still sounds impressive.

Get one and thank me later!

Better "Born On The Bayou" Intro!
58>Launcher.

Pops/Crackles deliberate!

A bit more Bluesy by not using Air Mode.
