2. distressor
3. TC elctronics finalizer
4. Lexicon PCM96
5. RME Fireface UFX

Excluding mic preamps?

RCA BA6A
1176
Pultec
Nightpro EQ3
Focusrite Red 3

Mix of older and newer tech I reckon...well, it's all old now though There are others, but I could work nicely with just these I think.

I don't see the need for the finalizer anymore, just gets some TC plugins or other multiband stuff. Presuming you are using a DAW?

Yeah the finalizer is easily replaced with the tc plugs but its mainly for the workflow and it works well for me and sounds pretty warm IMO when you send it back to the master track in my DAW. and yes including pres. Pretty much anything you put in the rack.

If not mic pres. I'd take 1176, distressor, C1, H3000 and a TG1

This is an interesting idea... I've been doing a bit of downsizing so this is pretty relevant to me.

From my collection, I'd take:

1. ISA428
2. Ferrofish A16 mk-ii
3. Korg DTR-1 (I like to route signals to it via RME's TotalMix, including instruments during tracking and mixing )
4. Lexicon MX400
5. dbx166XL

Of course if I could have anything I wanted, I'd probably go for a little more extravagance as far as the signal processing goes!

Also, I'm not including my lunchbox as "rack gear" in this case

I'm forced ITB, in a pillbox for now. Would love a compressor, EQ and preamp. All in due time.

Considering people seem to be skipping conversion

Ssl bus comp
Dangerous bax EQ
Dangerous dbox
Pair of la3a's
Distressor

Bus compression and EQ, monitoring and summing, and my outboard compression needs sorted.

great stuff guys lots of 1073's and Distressors as expected. when it comes to conversion, IMO the converters in the RME fireface are great for the money and good enough to where if you heard two of the same exact songs but one went through the RME and the other through a lavry the differences would be very small. an untrained ear definitely wouldn't notice

From gear I already have.. 5 pieces only...
Pair of racked MCI channel strips
H3000
Ensoniq DP4+
Lexicon PCM70
dBX DDP

The MCI strips have a good EQ so I could use that at a pinch.

The DP4+ is something I'm very familiar with, so attachment along with functionality gets it in my list. It also has EQs and compression if needed.

I'd want to swap out the DDP (even though it's very good) with a higher end unit - but it's the most versatile compressor I have at the moment.

From my own gear, I'd go with:

Great River Mixmaster 20
Bricasti M7
API 5500
A Designs Nail
Universal Audio 6176

With that plus a Mac, Pro Tools, Apogee Symphony I/O, some good mics in a good room...

Excluding Conversion, summing, preamps?

2 Distressors
1176 Rev A
RJR Buscomp, or the SSL or the API.
Maybe a nice shimmery 2 bus eq.

Weird, pretty much what I've planned on purchasing.

5 pieces of rack gear:

1. Great River Mixmaster 20 (for the 4 "nevish" pres and console sounding summing/monitoring)

2. Sebatron VMP 4000 (4pres for that tube sound)

3. Purple audio 10 slot 500 lunchbox (this is a piece of rack gear) with 4 avedis e27's, 4 chandler little devil eqs, and 2 BAC500 compressors

4. 2 Mohog Mofet 76 compressors.

Kind of a goofy question because if you were that limited on rack space you could just use modules with a 500 series, Aphex 9000 series, Valley's series, ADR series, etc... rack(s). On the practical side you could ask what would you have in a rack for "X" amount of dollars. As it stands you are probably getting a "these are the five pcs. of gear I like the best of what I own" answers.

If i had to record drums, then a 10u 500 series rack filled with any good quality pre's, 512/MA5, etc (providing that counts as 1 piece of rack gear), some other 4 channel preamp so i have 14 channels for drums, a pair of Distressors and an LA2A. If the 500 series rack is cheating, then 3x4 channel pre's, API, Vintech, etc, and a pair of Distressors is fine.

For anything other than drums, any decent pre with an EQ (1073 or equivalent, an API pre with a 550b, something like that) and a Distressor is fine. This is essentially the setup i have now for whenever i record outside of the studio - Lunchbox with an MA5 and borrowed 550b-> Distressor -> Duet 2 ->MacBook Pro

Im pretty happy to mix ITB, so as long as I can track one instrument at a time, be it vocals, ac/electric guitar, bass, and have it come in at decent quality then I'm not too fussy about what it is. I stress out more about the instruments and performers.
