For live use, 767, hands down. I don't use either for recording

In my soul group the female lead uses a 967 and the male lead uses a 767. Every engineer (smallish/medium clubs) remarks how good we sound. These clubs ALL use 58s. The 58 is a fine mic. I like the 767, and maybe just having a differnt flavor helps set us apart.

IMHO one mic that tends to be a nice "all-rounder" is the Shure Beta 57a
(just ask the Allman Bros.!)

The other one I'd be tempted to get starting out is the Electro-Voice EV RE16...

BTW either of these can be used with excellent results on studio vocals too.

P.S. The 57/58 works excellently on me-with a nice (Mackie Onyx on up) pre.
Even the VLZ3 is quite a step down compared to the Onyx for me.

I've sang through both live in countless rock shows, and the Beta 58's just sits better in the mix somehow. Hard to explain. It's like soloing an instrument in a dense rock mix; by its self the 767 sounds lovely, but live, in context, I'd choose a 58' hands down.

Like the 57; it's a staple for a reason.

Am biased towards the Beta 57a over the 58a (have mild sibilance), but I guess a good FOH guy can de-ess the Beta 58a if need be.

Just haven't come across "that many" FOH people that are good at de-essing, in my limited experience.
