How to control something with an LFO...

A while ago I was searching for delay units with random delay time settings, but there didn't seem to be any in existence. However, someone mentioned using a random LFO setting to control the time setting on a delay, and this interested me. But how do I do that? I know small amounts about basic synthesis, and I can kind of get my head around what exactly an LFO does (at least enough to understand why it would actually work in this situation), but any more than that and I am just confused.

I can't seem to find any "LFO guitar pedals", though of course I can find lots of pedals that include something like a delay function with an LFO on the side. Perhaps I'd need to get a synth module and use it stand-alone? Is that possible? Can a guitar be plugged into one of those?

Hopefully I've been clear about what I'm asking.

Any help would be appreciated!
