500 series eq great for snare ?

Hi

Im looking for a great 500 eq specifically for top mic snare drum ?

Something that fattens / increases size whilst maintaining transients with great control (don't usually like the 550a in this context for example).

any suggestions?

The chandler little devil is killer on both kck and snare. And bass to boot. It's a very very impressive price of kit. Not cheap but. It has a bass boost of 60 or 110. I didn't think it would be great for snare but on the 110 setting boosting a fair but with the filter engaged at 140, just great. Then pull a little mid ad some crack or tops if that's your thing and wula.

Don't like 550A either, but 550B often works well for snare. That into 1176 gets it there 90% of the time.

yeah, I find it mushes the transients - great on some sources but not on snares (for me).

also not great for fine control

otherwise, in general, I love the 550a

I'm a big fan of API eq. I know there are some decent 500 units

API 560 is cool, the Electrodyne 511 has sounded great on everything I've tried it on

550B and 32EQ... both killer on snare.

The 550A is indeed a little soft on snare.

it sounds to me like you want a SPL transient designer not a eq

+1 for the 560. I will usually buss down my top and bottom (and maybe a sample) through a 560 and an 1176 or API 527. Both the 527 can give a bit thicker and beefier snare sound and still has all the punch you could ever need. This chain (527 into 560) slays on snare drum. I usually save my 1176 and BAC 500 for vox and bass.
