Yup, Jules is correct. It's a KM86i.

They're also great tom mics. I've used the KM86, KM84 or KM140 on snare with very cool results.

The KM86 is basicly a multi-pattern KM84 with a little more presence from what I've been told.

It's also possible that it's the exceedingly rare km66. The 66 would be the tube version of the 86. 701k tube. Sounds great. Same relation to the 86 as a km64 (or km 264 if it has a tuschel) is to an 84. If it has an XLR attached, it's an 86. If it's a tuschel or that small connector for a 54, it would be a 66. I can't see the cable from the picture.

My guess would be that it's its predecessor the Sennheiser MD-409

Yup, It's a MD409. One of my favorite tom mics.

My first choice in live recording.

I have also hung the MD409 over the front of guitar cabinets.

how does the 609 hold up against the MD409? Have sennheiser change it much other than numbers?

/thanks mike

a check with metallicaworld.com tells us Lars uses three mics to record his drums and they're all Shures.

http://www.metallicaworld.co.uk/lars..._%20studio.htm

I mean, metallicaworld.com wouldn't say it if it weren't true...

Yeah, somebody must have used PhotoShop to insert the Neumann KM86 and Sennheiser MD409 into the pictures above.
