In The Box Bravado?

If your taste goes to the more adventurous or exotic side of the world of music, I highly recommend this record: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...Fencoding=UTF8.

Read the reviews on Amazon, it should give you an idea of the musical terrain. It's wonderful music and very much unique.

Anyway, I was listening to and admiring the record and reading its liner notes and I came upon a passage where the producer brags that the entire thing was recorded and mixed without a console, using only a Powerbook and Logic. The liner notes are fairly exhaustive... even going so far as to specify plug-ins used (I don't have the liner notes in front of me, but I do recall that Sonalksis was in the list).

This reads almost like an old-fashioned jazz or classical liner note where the recording techniques are detailed in an almost academic manner. There seems to be a Brian Eno irreverent-embrace-of-new-technology mindset as well.

I should add here that I think the record sounds good.

All of this is interesting to me because it's the first time I've seen someone boast that their record was recorded and mixed on a laptop without the conventional console/2" multitrack/analog outboard studio situation. Usually when people mix in the computer, they either hide it or just don't mention it. Mixing in the computer is generally seen as a circumstantial liability or budgetary limitation. This was the first time I've seen someone flaunt it and go so far as to detail the plug-ins, etc.

The statement is essentially: "We used what we had and we're proud of the results." Or maybe even "Even if we had a higher budget, we would have done it this way."

Is this the beginning of a trend or is this already commonplace and I just never noticed it before?

Are we entering the age of ITB Bravado?
