new vs. old -- re20 -- need opinions

I said it all pretty much in the title... in the market for an RE-20 sooner or later and I'm just wondering if it's another "the new versions suck" kind of thing. I'm sure it's useable either way, but if some experienced minds could point me one direction or the other if you think it makes any difference.

From my experience, RE20s haven't changed all that much, but I've only used 3 ever, and not an A/B comparison situation.

Consider an RE27. I just got one (230 bucks on ebay) and it is simply amazing. Its top end is a little too snarly (not really the right descriptive word, but just go with it), but with the high end roll off switch engaged it becomes amazing.

Old 20s sound great if the element is in great condition, but I've heard lots of old RE20s with re-built baskets. Either way, as long as you get a new or used RE20 or 27 **in good shape**, you'll be happy.

I think the same mic was sold as the PL 20 back 20 or so years ago. If memory serves, there was a smaller version available called a PL-10.

Does anyone remember this or am I crazy?

Not crazy. If memory serves the PL series was the SR line and RE was for studio/broadcast. I don't know that there were any sonic differences. The warranty policies may have been different. I have one of each and had sent the PL back for repair and was given a new RE with the appropriate appendages removed from the letters RE to create a PL.
