Sure... this will also get a Smashing Pumpkins sound too
You need - ***1 x Stereo Compressor with an external Key input ***
(This can be software or hardware)
Set up 2 x stereo groups, feed to those groups ALL the dist guitars and bass. (but perhaps not the solo(s)
Strap a compressor across the 2nd group
(DAW folks please note - use a sample delay like Timeadjuster to make the FIRST group the same sample delay number, or just set up the same compressor but with bypass selected)
Set up a send to the key input of the compressor on the 2nd group.
Send a lot of kick drum to that group...
Pull down the 1st group, now, just listening to the 2nd group mess with the parameters of the compressor so that the gtrs are 'kicked in the throat' with each bass drum hit... (you need a very quick release time) Make it sound like the Pistols or sSmashing Pumpkins through a cheapo car stereo maxed out to within an inch of its life....
"hanga hanga hanga" - it sound's ridiculous of course....
Then pull that down and pull up the 'plain' gtr group... Now FEED IN the keyed compression group.. - Blend to taste.... I often use 50/50
Sounds pretty cool. Is that one of those things you find yourself doing all the time or just on certain songs? Lately I've been doing the same tricks to everything I've been doing... because it sounds boring compared to the songs with the tricks on it. I know why a lot of mixers have their own 'sound', but what to do so everything doesnt sound the same?
