Tracking to 2-track

I'm fascinated with modern pop recordings that were tracked directlyl to two-track tape (aside from the obvious jazz and classical recordings).

I know of a few, like Tom Wait's "Blue Valentine" and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Will the Circle Be Unbroken"

Anyone know of others?

Hmmm Maybe you're right. I think I read something about that.

I could sing or play to 'recording specs' but maybe not both at the same time these days.

Not sure if a 4 track qualify for answer, but;
Had this midnight flat rate demo thing going back in the mid 80-s.
Usually rock bands , right off the floor to two tracks of Otari 12 with the 1/2" 4 track head stack.
Then the lead vox with quick fixes punched on #3, and the lead on #4.
Way too much fun and sounded really, really good as far as I remember.
It took longer to set up and run through, but almost no mixing time compensated for it.
Ohhh..the sweet, good old days..

Frank Black did his last 5 (or so) albums doing just this. (With "Pistolero" and FBatC Title cd sounding especially amazing production-wise.)

He learned of this from Reverend Horton Heat who I hear does all of his stuff this way. (Never heard any.)

Takes a tight band to do this...but the payoff is great.

David
