i want a "crushing" comp for little $

hiya,

i went through a phase of tracking with nearly no compression no im loving it again.. i have a lunch box which i am waiting for the osa comp for to use on snare (hopefully) i use a dbx 160 on kick and bass guitar what i really want is something i can SLAM room mic with and front of kit mics with but due to lunchbox and 500 series pre's i have little to spend, so whats the sort of nicest slamming compressor with little out lay?

im not sure if this is for the low end theory or not... i guess im just after opinions... if it is for lowend feel free to move it mods

Here are some units long out of production, but still seen in the used market(s):

Alesis MicroLimiter - seen on eBay, etc. for well under $100. The poorman/woman's Fairchild.
MXR Stereo Limiter - in the $100 - $200 range.
Urei JBL 7110 -- a bit more money generally, and you'll need 2; lots of control options.

Or the TAB-Telefunken u374a pair that ... I am ... selling on Gearslutz classified. Channels are not matched on that unit however, and it puts out an insane amount of gain along with the compression. The u374a is a crude Talkback compressor, but it can do amazing things to room mics....

Used Joemeek C2. Very versatile and underestimated opto squashing machine. Works in mono or stereo, but not in dual mono.
Or wait for it's reincarnation, the MC2, to hit the shelves for around 200$

the valley people dyna-mite is one of the most brutal room mic crushers available.
what a little meanie! heh

you should get one of them (stereo) for 200-300 bucks.

i have some great compressors in my arsenal (la-2a, 1178, 160sl, fatso...), but foor room mics i usually take the dyna-mite without hesitation.

I want a hot supermodel who's low maintanence. When you find that cheap but awesome sounding compressor let me know cause I'm sure she'll be pretty close by

Altec 1612. Not the most functional but it has a pretty trashy sound

well...should try the free SSL listen mic compressor. It's VST, and falls in that $$ category;

I hate to say it, but the limiters on presonus mic pres are great for squishing room mics. Ultra hard limit.

(in my best Vincent Vega): "Thass'a bold statement."

I totally agree on the 7110 Urei / JBL, real versatile comp.

Another vote for the Ridge Farm Boiler. It was designed for pretty much exactly this task....they may have gone out of business though.

My friend has one of these (along side some high end gear). He always says I should get one. He tells me it can get really trashy - in a good way.

I'll second that! I had a Siemens U274, the same animal I believe, and it crushes in a beautiful way that makes totally linear yet preserves the crack on the fronts at the same time.....

+1 on this! another thing to look out for would be the valley gain brain II modules or commander modules. both will slam the hell out of drum room mics. you'll need to buy a compatible rack for those though, so your cost may be a bit higher, but you will love em.

i've actually had good luck with the fmr rnc slamming drum room mics.

must agree.. have used it to squish or pump things percussive.. not really considered a mojo piece but it works well on almost anything.

BUT...for serious baseball announcer squish, exploding bass and guitars and major cymbal/snare battle ..try an Altec 1612a..they are still around for kinda cheep ..very thick and meaty

HA.. had not gotten to your post before I recommended the 1612... I L O V E it on Bass, Guitars, and if I want the OH really pumping (which is not really very often) it is the one.. it is my go to for overdrive lead GTR and in your face bass...

You can get an Overstayer compressor for $500. Never used it, but it seems to be getting good reviews. I plan on trying one out soon.

If 1176 is out of the question Valley Dynamite is the next best thing for this application. I like it a whole lot better than EL8s in 'nuke'
