Pencil Trick, works to de-ess?

Ok, this should be a short thread.

I was informed this was only useful for plosives (p-pops and bursts of air) from a vocalist's mouth.

Now I've seen it suggested that it'll work for excessive "ess" whistles and hisses as well.


Is this true? If so, can someone explain the physics of this for me?
