A patchbay, some resistors and a soldering iron? And then spend the money on a really nice mic pre for makeup. I bet a home made folcrom like that with, say an NPNG on the end would kill.....
Not much of scientific description - but I really liked the Vintage Design summer. My friend owns one and it's a prototype, modded to be cleaner, still it added life to our mix, just by running the mix through the unit. I think it would be a killer setup together with a nice patch and some analog love.
So, my first experience with the VD was good - I want one!
Input CH1-8, DB25 ( standard tascam pinning )
Input CH9-16, DB25 ( standard tascam pinning )
Insert 1&2, DB25 (AES / EBU pinning)
Bus-input L / R, 2xXLR female for addon of a SU2P for 16 more channels
Main out L / R, 2xXLR male
Monitot out L / R, 2xTRS
PSUD, 4 pin power supply connector

I can confirm that the NPNG 2NW is seriously bad ass, when used with a passive summing mixer, like the Folcrum RMS216!!
The RMS216 is not that expensive when you add it up. Without switching, using decent metal film resistors, your looking around 300-400 without putting in any time!
