Refurbishing vintage mics

Hello, I have a vintage AKG C 414 EB, and two Electrovie PL 20's I would like to get refurbed.
What is the going rate for refurbing mics?
Is it worth it, or should I just get new?
Thanks,
Matt

On the AKG 414EB I would replace all the tantalum capacitors. That is the main thing I have found that goes bad on those mics.

The EV PL20 is a dynamic mic and there isn't really much to beyond cleaning the connector, unless you want to replace the dynamic element which is the main guts of the mic.

For the 414 I'd see about Jim Williams / Audio Upgrades. He'll overhaul the electronics and go a bit beyond a "refurb" job.

Thanks guys!
One of the PL 20's works, but has some crackle.
The other is DOA.
Bummer thing is that I just sold 2 on Ebay that worked great.
Thought I had one that was in good working order, but upon futher investigation I'm **** out of luck~!
There is something wrong with the AKG.
It has NO top end. Someone said due to oxidation? Don't know, but the dude I use to master said don't ever use that mic again unless you send it in to be fixed.
Thats why I'm asking, any Idea of price?
I can grab a good condition used one from a bud for around 5 bills.
In the meantime, I bought a brand new Blueberry as my main vox mic, so I don't need the AKG right away.
Could really use the PL 20!
Thanks,
Matt

If the PL20 is like the RE20, sometimes the roloff switch goes bad.
It's not really a DIY type fix, but EV has excellent service and their
prices are ridiculously low, or at least they were about 3 years ago
when I had my RE20s fixed.

If you decide to send your 414s to AKG, be really careful that they don't
switch out the much sought after brass capsule for one of the bad
sounding ones with the white ring around it.

EV-Telex service

The good times are over at EV-Telex service department.

I sent in 2 RE-55's. NO SERVICE PARTS AVAILABLE. Apparently, some (MBA, style guy) genius dumpstered a mountain of support parts for "obsolete models" like RE-55, 666, 668, (insert your favorite classic EV dynamic microphone here).

They did offer to put a new capsule in my PL-20 and replace the foam (that I had replaced a month earlier) for $255. I declined that generous offer.

Classic Electro-Voice of WWII through 1984 is all over. Replaced by new people selling newer and cheaper stuff (some is pretty good stuff). Don't worry, boutique people will pick up the slack, eventually.

Wow. That's really sad to hear. I remember sending in RE 20s and basically
getting brand new mics back for like $80-$100. Looks like I should hold on to
my RE 16 as well.

i just sent in a re-20 and a re-16 that looked like it was used as a hammer, ev fixed em both for 79.00 and that included shipping.
the average repair cost ( as per their tech ) on a re-20 is 150.00.
i have had great luck with ev's service and very much recommend them.
email kelly or give them a call.
