AT 4050 quieter than AT4040????

Weirdness - or so it seems to me.

I just got an AT 4050 and A/B'd it against my AT4040 and it is alot quieter than the 4040. By that I mean at the same level settings through my Grace, he signal is lower than the 4040. It sounds very good, just not nearly as loud.

Is this normal?? Could there be something wrong with the 4050?

The -10db cut is in the off position on both mics.

And on my voice, the AT4040 almost sounds better than the 4050 - crisper and less muffled - maybe an illusion because it seems louder?

spec sheets

AT4040 is specified OPEN CIRCUIT SENSITIVITY –32 dB (25.1 mV)Β± 2 dB re 1V at 1 Pa*
AT4050/CM5 is OPEN CIRCUIT SENSITIVITY (1 kHz) –36 dB (15.8 mV) Β± 2 dB, re 1V at 1 Pa*1

AT4040 is 0dB to 8dB hotter (noticeable!). 8 dB would be at the maximum worst-case high/low limits, but most are probably about 4 dB hotter. The mfg. verifies your hearing.

A-T doesn't go into detail about the polar pattern of the 4050 measured, or other useful trivia.

If you compare the freq. response graphs of the two mics (looking at the 4050 in cardioid) you can see that the 4040 has a little dip at about 80Hz and a little bump at about 8K that the 4050 doesn't.

The 4050 also has a little low-end bump.

These factors could also make the 4040 seem less muffled.

My experience is that the 4050 is an excellent all around mic (especially for the money) and takes EQ really well.

The 4047 is excellent, too and is also a 'mellow' sounding mic, but again, can be EQ'd pretty radically before things get weird.

How smooth is the top end on the 4040 compared to the 4050?

Comparing the top end of the two - I think the 4050 is significantly smoother than the 4040. I like the way the 4040 sounds, but strictly listening to the highs, I can see where it sounds a bit more edgy - perhaps shrill??? next to the 4050. Not shrill like a C1, but more than the 4050. The 4050 seems more even throughout the freq. range. I hope I am hearing this right

Thanks for the explanation rufus - I feel better that my new mic is not broken!

WHICH ONE ?

The 4040 and the 4050 are the two mics I'm debating on. I'm a baritone singer (country stuff). Which one would you guys recommend for my vox and acoustic guitar. I'm looking to add some life to a simple singer/songrwriter demo. I'm running to a semi-pro hard disc recorder with compression. Thanks, Hack.

4040 or 4050?

I don't have a 4040, but I need to audition a couple. I like my pair of 4050/CM5's (older model than current, and very similar, AT4050) for decent smoothness, and high electrical output.

On the used market, the prices of these 2 models sometimes cross. Both are at least good values. The 4050 is a multi-pattern model that you may find interesting uses for in Omni and Fig-8, as well as Cardioid. The Fig-8 pattern (deep, smooth null) is why I considered/bought the 4050/CM5.

get the 4050...the quality upgrade in the top end and low end response is more than worth it.

If your feeling a little brave, for that kinda voice you might be better off with the 4060. It's a good all around vocal mic.

Dumb question...is the -10db pad switched on? That would definitely make the 4040 louder than the 4050.

I definitely recommend the 4050. I use mine all the time for a lot of different things...voice, acoustic guitar, cello, strings, drum room, etc.
