Am I grounding out the negative signal in my acoustic guitar pickup?

Hey, this might be a real newbie question but I'm having some issues with an acoustic guitar pickup (Fishman Rare Earth Humbucker). The sound comes out slightly distorted and extremely soft. (and YES, I did try changing the batteries, checking all the solder points, etc) I was wondering though because there is a + cable, - cable and ground cable and because it is used with a TS 1/4" like most guitar signals, not TRS, that maybe I'm grounding out the negative? Or is it supposed to be that way? I can't think of why it would make sense but I suppose its possible. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!
