I've had Stylus for quite a while and it is excellent in every possible detail.

First and foremost, how does it sound ?
Awesome! If you want grooves you got Grooves. Tons of grooves and all uniformly excellent. Not a dud in the bunch so far. 3 gig's worth of grooves.

Easy to use ? Yes ! Really easy.

Easy on the CPU ! On my lowly G3/233/Desktop with an XLR8 G4500Mhz CPU upgrade I can max out my VSTi's with 8 instances of Stylus ! If only every company could code like this.

My only wish is for more grooves to be available in the future. Perhaps some of the Ilio stuff could be ported over in the future for X-TRA dough of course.

Can you dump your own loop collections into it? Or is it a fixed collection?

from what I know / see / heard it is a fixed library.

pitty ... would be WICKED AWESOME if you could import your own recordings or other libraries in there.

I've been wanting to try one of these out. My CD-J 1000 flips everyone out. I love it. It's nice to be able to blast on the MAINS and not get feedback loops.

Eric Persing is a good friend, and I think he's a genius at sounds, so I'm biased I suppose.

But Stylus is basically the 1000 loops that you will spend the rest of your life trying to find, all already in one place with a cool VSTi GUI.

If you use loops, you want it.

TinderArts :
Love the graphic !

Yes, Apple has come up with it's own plug-in format "Audio Units" which works at the OS level.

This is good and bad. Good because it is a new "standard" and there is a possibility that everyone will adopt it for the Mac. VST, MAS, etc....Bad because it is a NEW standard. Yet another one. And like anything NEW, it takes time for companies to have faith that it is worth adopting over and above their own "proven" format. Such as VST. Think of the sheer number of plugs that would have to be coded over.
Evidently , Apple is making it easy for these 3rd party plug-in developers by giving them an application/template thingy which will enable them to convert existing plugs in a matter of hour(s).

Apple is really in a constant state of flux though. Ditching serial for USB (I don't have USB, but now there's USB2 and I've read that some people are having problems getting their MIDI to work reliably), new machines, new OS's, new Audio Units thing, Apple/Emagic thing....Personally, I'm waiting for things to settle. rollz

Waiting for things to settle-know what you mean.
I doubt they ever will. I think it's going to have to be my attitude that changes, not the rate of change.rollz

Re:stylus
heard/saw it in action this week at a Gearslut's studio and it was very cool indeed. Clever and sounds great. Eric P is really on his game.

hope he brings out an orchestral plug-in series....

Hello y'all...
I am interested in the Stylus BUT how are you approaching the problem with the Challenge key?

I mean, if Spectrasonics goes bust, basically you get to keep the single samples (can they be used without the interface, BTW?), but there's no guarantee you'll be able to use it in the future (i.e. you reformat your hard-disk, switch from Wintel to Mac, etc).

This is even more important in the case of other products which are pure software... the company goes bust and you gotta hack the program to keep it going.

On the other hand this system is probably un-hackable...

Thx,

Paul

Brian,

I'm also interested in Stylus. Can you tell me what level of editing you can perform on the loops. Watching the video demo on their web site, I got the impression that you have some contol over the MIDI files that play the loop sounds, via the interface. Can you, for example, remover or add a kick drum within a loop? Can you change the sound of a kick or snare, and adjust its level?

thanks in advance,
dave patterson / knobville
