Line 6 : Rack Mount Units

Okay, the filter pro models the Mu-Tron III; Zvex Seek Wah; Oberheim VCF; Voice Box; V-tron; Electrix Filter Factory; Spin Cycle; Comet Trails; Slow filter; Octisynth; Moog, Oberheim, Sequential Circuits, and ARP Synths; Korg X911 guitar synth; Growler; and Q Filter.

The mod pro models the Fender Deluxe Optical Tremolo, Vox AC15 Bias Tremolo, MXR Phase 90, Mu-Tron Bi-Phase, Ibanez Flying Pan, Uni-Vibe, Fenderยฎ Vibratone, Leslie 145, MXR Flanger, A/DA Flanger, Boss CE-1 Chorus Ensemble, Roland Dimension D, Song Bird/Dytronics Tri-Stereo Chorus, Boss VB-2 Pitch Vibrato, Ring modulator, Panner

And we pretty much know what the Echo farm unit, and others do. Now... These units run about $300 NEW. WTF? Anyone use these? I mean, a Dimension D for $300?! A multron 3 & seek wah in the same unit? What's the haps??? If these sound anything close to the O.G.'s I'm getting the whole line.

The current pricing raises the flag in my mind that they are either going to discontinue the boxes or release new and improved versions. Could be wrong, but you might want to check the Line 6 webpage for new products. At that price I really want the spare dough to pick them up, though.

Line 6 Problems

A year ago I had two faulty Line 6 Pod 2's, a Delay Modeller Pedal which sent the stereo balance askew when switched in, and a Modulation Modeller Pedal which kept losing it's memory. I experienced all these problems over a 3 week period. Consequently, though I loved the sound of these units, my experiences totally destroyed my confidence in their reliability.
I wrote a three page letter to Line 6 in USA (I'm London based), and received a three line reply offering to have a specially tested unit sent to my favourite shop for purchase.
Temptation got the better of me recently, and I now own another Pod 2, which so far seems to be working fine.
Then tempted by the sudden price crash of the Echo Pro rack units I bought one 10 days ago.
IT LASTED LESS THAN A WEEK! No bumps, and protected by my rack case from it's day of purchase, it just won't power up. I guess it's the internal (infernal?) fuse, but I'm not gonna mess up the warranty by opening it up.
Maybe it should be renamed the ECHO Semi Pro.
Anyone else out there had as much fun with Line 6 garbage?

A good friend of mine that I jam and record songs with has been playing his Line 6 amp for years without problems. Sounds great and has never failed him. I find that many of the attempts it makes at "metal" sounds suck, though.

Maybe there's a difference between the reliabilty of racked/foot pedal Line 6 compared to the amps? Maybe shipping them overseas is ****ing them up? Wish I could tell ya.

Line 6

I appreciate your feedback.
Prior to buying my first defective Pod last year, I knew of a few guys who had Pods with no probs. The earlier ones were built in the States. The new ones are built in Malaysia. No prizes for guessing why production was moved there.....
Is that where the problems lie?
I must make it clear, and I did make this point to Line 6 in my 3 page missive, I am a huge fan of the concept and sound (most of the time) of their products, it's the constant problems I'm sick of.
Have I just been extremely unlucky, or are there other Line 6 users with similar bad experiences?

Why have they not released all this stuff as plug-ins?

As far as i know Amp-farm was a huge success...

they haven't even released new models for amp farm in years...plus we don't have the new vetta models they have now...no filters, modulaters...

I would buy'm in a second if I could run them of my computer...

Hey line 6 meet my lil friend fuuck

I've asked Line 6 this question several times and received no real answer. I use Echo Farm all the time, but my vintage farms freak it out every now and then.

Ditto on the metal sounds... unless you are using them on things other than guitar.

My guess on the plugin question: people with a full bore Alsihad Mix system can often afford the real thing, or at least rent it. From a marketing perspective the Flextone and P.O.D. are brilliant, since they are within the financial reach of most hobbyist guitarists, a much bigger market. I'm sure they have done really well this way and have no good reason to focus their developement on niche markets.

Has anyone actually used the Mod Pro or whatever it's called? I don't have anything that does a decent flange. Now that it's $300 I'm oh so tempted to grab one but I'm in a holding pattern for new gear. So if it totally rocks I'll grab one otherwise I'll wait a few months until I have extra money floating around again.

I used to sell Line 6 amps when they first came out. We had a number of units come back to the store with problems. The company was not very helpful. The store decided to not "re-up" and blew our the remaining inventory. This was about four years ago. Things may have changed. I hope so. I'd kind of like to get the delay and mod pro units.

If only these boxes came equipped with a s/pdif or AES i/o...

when MOTU's new 2408 mk3 and PCI 424 card comes out, I'm switching over to it, and also adding a MOTU 308 (AES and S/PDIF i/o box) to patch in various digital FX, and these would be a perfect addition if I could just patch em in digitally, I wonder how bad the latency would be to patch them analog, could always fix that - yet digital i/o would still be nice....

I agree. But then what would people like VSL-666 do? Shutter to think...

I've got one of each (Filter/Mod/Echo) and think they are a great (for the price). I even had a client come in with his vintage memoryman pedal - it sounded like crap - buzz - overloading on the input without much level, etc. He pointed to my rack and said "Hey, doesn't that echo Pro model my memoryman?" mere minutes later we had emulated his very patch with no noise and all the sounds. It saved the session. Sure there's no digital I/O - but I've already gotten more use out of them then I would waiting around for Line 6 & Digi to get off their butts and make the Mod Farm or the Filter Farm. There still isn't a Bass Farm!!! They are especially useful when midi beat clock synced to your PT session!

I say yes.
