hey guys,

i have one as well and absolutely love it for bass gtr. - it has improved that area of my mix by leaps and bounds. i'm less satisfied with it for vocals however. i'm doing primarily female vox thru a Soundelux U195. i've tried U195 -> RNC -> fatso -> PT with just the warmth and haven't been able to control tone enough. i end up barely hitting the fatso's warmth circuit on softer passages or completely distorting on louder ones. nothing in between really. i have tried using just the fatso using both the compressor and warmth and get some better results, but like the sound of the RNC a little better when it comes to vox. has anyone had a similar experience? am i doing something completely wrong here?

Make sure you set up the vocal sound & compression with the Fatso in BYPASS, only once you are happy with levels to the converter and compression & vocal sound, should you then gently use the Fatso's warming FX...

You can easly get into gainstaging aggrivation if you forget to bypass it when setting up levels...

Also investigate you converter input calibration.. I run at -14 I find my outboard likes this... and it's a good level for my units...

I have a number of high end compressors, but absolutely love the RNC for some things. It is a great unit and for the price cannot be beaten. Its a little galling sometimes passing up my Trakker for the RNC knowing its going to deliver at 1/10th the price. I use PT as well and find the RNC warms things up nicley, it lops of a little of the high end and has less headroom than other units, but soemtimes this is what you want

I had a play with a mates FATSO the other day.... i may be going out on alimb here so i say this as i put on my flame proof suit...

But the FATSO is good but for th money i would spend my money elsewhere..

It does do good things but if you spent eh same sort of money on sonemthing else that would be more practical and flexible..

Maybve its jsut cos they are so overpriced here in Australia.

YMMV

and i am sure it does!!!!

Michael....

I usually use my 2" becuase it is the real thing and tames all thsoe sthings that the FATSO does with aplomb... then i have been dumping it into Alishad for mixdown.

I think the things like the FATSO are good for people without real top flight preamps, consoles, compressors, eqs and mics etc.

But lately i have been tracking into Alishad with my Shep SN8's and have not found the need to use FATSO.. becuase i spend that little bit of extra time going out and listenign to the source of the sound, choosing my mics wisely and positioning them appropriately. The FATSO makes people work less hard on achieving their source sounds. So it does have its palce int he food chain.. just notmine right now..

I am supremely spoilt to have access to so much top flight gear so i am not struggling topull sounds that i possibly cant pull becuase i dont have X Y or Z...

So in regard to gear that could do the same type of job perhaps a good qaulity tube compressor like the Summit TLA 100?... get a tech to devise simple discrete tube preamp/line amp that could be cascaded in gain stages to acheive the desired saturation effect. Locally here in Australia there is one guy 'sebatron' who makes a very ncie and cheap 4 channel tube preamp thats all discrete and has di's and is all balanced. You would be qbel to cassced two channels into each other to acheive a wide harmoinc variance etc etc and cost A LOT less than a FATSO!!!!! they cost nearly $5500 Australian over here give or take... this sebtraon box costs around $1600 Australian... so with the change you could buy a distressor or some other peice of kit that would do more to your sound than the FATSO would.
In Australia that sort of money can buy you some seriously good kit!..

Maybe it's becuase i am oldschool type of engineer (even though i am 22!!! i worked with a lot of old school crew when i started) and i prefer to do things the old way and not mix in the 'box' etc.. i am still suspicious of digital generally! so there!

Thanx Wiggy,

the sebatron box looks very cool. They have a price of $ 2400 (AUD) on their website, can you get it for $ 16000 (AUD), I might be interested.

Re FATSO: I have a couple of Summit TLA 100s and a couple of Distressors and a whole bunch of great mic pres (checking into the Scheps right now) but short of a Crane Song HEDD, i could not find anything that does what the FATSO does. I had my share of analog projects from the early 70 to the early 80s but I'm not a big fan of 2", because IMHO you never get back what you put in. Analog tape has a certain sound that I like, but I feel it's rather *uncontrolled* and the FATSO gives me a more controlled way of manipulating the sound in a similar way. $ 5500 (AUD) is a big chunk of change, though, and I would probably be looking for an alternative as well.

Keep me posted on the sebatron prices.okk

And Michael, while you are answering silly questions, how does the Fatso compare to the UAD emulation?
