If you desire shared attack times, this is a great stereo unit, and that sounds like a great price. I only used it twice, (without slamming all buttons in-sorry) on BG vocals and it was really good.

Ditto....

Buy it!!!!

We have one that gets used religoulsy... Fantastic Overhead compressor to add real body and punch to a kit and room as well.

Nice on Bass, vocals, and evenn snare drum if you are after a snappy and thick sounding snap to ya snare... kinda similar to 1176 but something unquantifiably different to my ears.. but still damn good.

Just do ya self a favour buy it and get over it cos once u have it in ya rack it wont be leavin and it will be used regualrly and u will be boasting on forums like this about how much you got it for to make us jealous.... and its working!!!!! grrtut

Have fun and use ya ears cos it may turn out not too be what u r after.... as if!!!

Let us know!

PEACE

Yeah, if it's working right $1000 is a good deal. While it's similar to an 1176 it is NOT the same as an 1176. Realize that going into it and I doubt you'll be disapointed.

The 1178 has a better chance of tracking well in stereo than two 1176's.

The 1178 is not the same circuit as the 1176 but it is still a FET based comp. Made with op-amps and not descrete like the 1176. It uses a Dual FET in a single DIL, this could be why it track well in stereo. It is op-amp on the way in but I can't remember if it has a TX on the way out. I can look it up.

I'd say if you can afford it buy it. It is another flavour to the rack and pretty cool on drum groups and sub groups.

It should be noted that there IS a streo adapter that allows you to link 2 1176's:

True, and in fact the Purple Audio MC76 has it built in. But it's also true that it's difficult to make it work well at maintaining a stereo image.

I can't think of anything I'd use a stereo 1176 on. Maybe a drum buss but there are so many other compressors I like for that. The 1178 being one of them. Hell, just about anything with snap and some color.

Thanks e-cue for the picture.

I have made a few leads and adapters and tried to balance 1176's before but have never seen the Urei box. I'd be interested just how they set the tweeky up. I'm guessing that is what the third component at the right is for.

Actually I have just noticed the text at the bottomn right hand corner.

replace mercury cell ........ every 6 months .

Now I am interested in what is inside.

The 1176SA stereo adapter is just two resistors and a battery.

The battery is for compensating on different FET cut-off voltages in different modules. Current drawn from the battery is VERY small, as it only sees about 2.2M Ohm load.

The 1178 is pretty much a dual 1176 - soundwise - but is made mostly in opamp technology, not mainly discrete like the 1176.

Yes, there are trimmers inside the box for both 0VU trim and GR Tracking trim in the section behind the meters.

The functions of each are written on the silk screen of the PCB.

I don't know of any controls under the VU meters on the front

https://www.gearslutz.com/board/attac...178-1178-f.jpg

If you can't calibrate the meter to 0VU on the 0VU trimmers, you could try a full calibration (Q-bias and meter throw). Is it working properly aside from the meter calibration?
