Bob Ohlsson was kind enough recently to inform me that the EV 666 is similar to the RCA 77 in tone.
Is the EV RE15 or RE16 pretty close to the EV 666 and RCA 77 in
terms of tone quality?
Just picked two old RE16's off e-bay, and took the foam out of one to help extend the high end sensitivity, and really like them.
My non-pro ears seem to think it has some of the attributes of "ribbonish" tone. The experience with a 77DX is limited to only talking through one in a college radio station class
many moons ago!
Any other dynamic microphone suggestions to explore (RE20/PL20?) would also be appreciated, as this sort of sound works well on my voice. Already have a Beyer M88TG BTW.
Yes, but the "swap meet" portion of the gearslutian mind likes
bargains!
Seriously, I do plan to try the R84 sometime, thanks for the mention.
Like the idea of a dynamic partly though because they seem less prone
to SPL issues, than most ribbons, over a long period of use.
Didn't Electro-Voice invent the EV 666 to help oust the RCA out of radio use
on this exact point?
(seem to remember the college VO class instructor told that)
Anyway...
Can get pretty LOUD with vocals on occasion!
Feel free to correct if this is a mistaken impression.
Guess I'm "once bitten twice shy".
A "KJ" (karoke jockey) was pretty upset once when I accidently
damaged one of his speakers at a club after asking him to
reduce the level on the microphone (he didn't).
