Masterlink: How outboard comp, EQ interact?

Wondering how to get signal from the hard drive out to compressor and EQ then back to Masterlink to burn a master?

Anybody working this way? Any work-arounds?

ciao,

You can't do it. The MasterLink can't play from the hard drive and record back to the hard drive at the same time. It also cannot record directly to the CD burner, but can only make CD's internally from the hard drive.

To use an outboard eq or compressor, you will need to
1) record your mix to the MasterLink hard drive,
2) burn a CD of it on the ML's burner,
3) use a second CD player (make sure it has great D to A convertors) to play your CD through the outboard equipment you want to use
4) from there back to the MasterLink inputs to record a new file on the hard drive.

Don't feel cheated, you still would have needed two mixdown tape machines to do this in the old days.

So how to master?

OK, thanks

Then how would you do mastering with the Masterlink?

Would you:

Do a mix -- then burn a CD.

Then get another CD player and then play the CD

come out of CD player into Vari MU and Massive Passive and then back into the Masterlink????

Or is there some other way?

Yep, that's one way. Another way is to use the software based compression and eq built into the MasterLink. But it sucks compared to the MU and Massive.

I just do a 2-mix back to 2 tracks of my multitrack [MX-2424]...

That way, I have a 24-bit/44.1K, un-mastered mix
that is 'in sync' with all of the individual tracks...

When I'm ready to master, I run that 2-mix digitally to my Finalizer+...

I use the 'analog loop' of the Finalizer*
to/from my mastering chain [FATSO & Avalon 747],
then DIG out to the Masterlink...

I used to dither down to 16-bits before going to the MLink,
but (after trying both ways) now I send a full 24-bit to the MLink,
and then internally dither [in the ML] when I burn a RedBook CD...

Now, I always archive a [ mastered 24-bit] CD24
from the MLink as well as a RedBook version...

*BTW, I just got an 8ch Ramsa A/D converter, and once I hook it all up,
I will probably use it to 'replace' the A/D half of the Finalizer loop...

I mix analog to to 96k 24 bit Masterlink

then 96k to ProTool via Finalizer SRC to 44.1 24 bit

Mastering session in ProTools + dither

16bit 44.1 master back out to Masterlink for CDR creation

(all digital transfers)

Wow Bob,

You're setup sounds a bit like mine. I'm using the TC Gold Channel with the Fatso and Avalon 747 in the loop to the MasterLink 24/44.1. Now I know my signal chain idea was pretty good if it was your idea as well.

Tell me if the Ramsa convertors sound better than the Finalyzer. I've thought about that deal at Full Compass too.
