Err...Does a person count as a piece of gear?

I actually think I would still like to have an older SSL console. (I see people cringing!). A G series I think? I just like the patching and the ready to go EQ on every channel. Working fast is really important so you can get to the basic sound quickly, and then spend your time playing and tweaking the wierd stuff.

I dont think going thru pages of menus on a computer is an intuitive, fast, or comfy way to work. Give me knobs, please.

For me, it would be a great sounding recording space and a great sounding control room to call my own! God knows, I have enough gear at this point...

Gotta agree with better bands/musicians
or at least better bands/musicians that are
willing to work with me.

Not that my gear lust isn't high,
some Royers or AEAs, some John Hardy
or Great Rivers, etc.

But drummers who can keep time,
singers who can stay in tune,
etc. would let me work on getting better
faster than getting more cool gear.

I wish Shortcut keys could do everything.

Like....Whats the shortcut key for patching drum tracks 1 - 20 panned L-R into tape send 16 & 17 to a dBx sub generator, back thru channel 47 & 48 with the comps linked, on 2:1 attack slow, with -3 dB @ 500 .8 oct BW, +1 @100 1 oct wide? And I want tracks 1 - 20 out of the main buss and I want metering on the drum submix on ch 47 - 48. Oh... and of course tracks 47 & 48 are to be automated, linked to track 47 so I only have to move that one fader.

Im still gonna need to solo that one tom track whose gate opens up with the snare sometimes, so i can mute it with autmation, or tweak the gates sidechain with EQ.

There are things you can do on a large format board thats pretty immediate and hard to do elsewhere, as quick. Course it aint cheap.... nor portable

As far as something tangible goes, I would say a pair of $20K+ Mastering speakers with an acoustically balanced control room to match.

I'll sort of mirror some of the above posts, and say "the right producer/engineer" since I generally am only recording my own stuff and would really benefit from another person to work with.

in terms of something tangible, I've got a lot of really insane stuff, the only "gear" thing holding me back from a really great sound is a terrific control room and live room.

and that whole "I need a good producer/engineer" thing.

but I'm working on that. :-)
