I use the masderingslabs inside the H8000 for these purposes. It has a couple of compressors /limters and eq on board. Very usefull to check a mix for radio. Best is to buy an optimod...

The "what happens to My mix on the radio" white paper by Orban is a good read.

So , what to do?
Sometimes I listen to other songs on the same radio stations and they sound pretty good. but here is the point. When i listen to those songs in my studio, i actually dont like the way they sound.. No attack, no punch, actually, almost no compression at all. So no wonder why the radio actually improved them
So.. should I start mixing my work more crappy?? less compression on the mix overal?? If so .. why do we have to mix FOR the radio. I mean, i love the way it sounds on every system, But the radio!
Its a very tough situation

Opinions?

PD. if you want to listen to the song go to my myspace , first song

Without hearing your mixes, it sounds to me you may use to much compression in your mixes or the mastering engineer is. Seems to be the trend though. Everything is squashed 10 fold on the radio
sometimes you have to leave a little off the table. My feeling is you can hear the compression in your mix there is too much.

Yep.

At first it came off to me as "My loudness war was here first!", but that's not exactly the point.

(And its interesting to note that much of the strength of this paper comes from the fact that the two guys who wrote it (together) are fierce competitors in a very fierce market. Some even describe them as "enemies"!)

If you take nothing else away from this paper, at least understand this:
1) Contrary to the conventional "wisdom," trying to squeeze more on-air volume by means of clipping and stupid amounts of fast brickwall limiting at the mastering stage of your record DOES NOT WORK! (In fact, it can even make it quieter!)

2) The clipping you do in the above-described attempt will do nothing more than grunge up the sound of your record (ESPECIALLY on the radio!)
If this makes no sense to you, then read the paper.
