The future of mixing consoles

Here's what I'ld like to see:

An affordable standardized modular based system. Kind of like the 500 series in full console format. I know there are some things out there leaning towards but I'm talking fully modular and standarized. The initial standardization could be rough but in the end everyone wins. You pay like $2k for the 16, 24 or 32 channel mainframe and add to you as needed/budget permits. Manafacturers can produce various flavors of eq, aux sends, faders, meters, whatever. The engineer gets to choose form a wide variety of sources and can configure things to his liking. The beauty of it is you wouldn't necessarily outgrow it, just expand it, upgrade it, etc. Pretty much like what people do now with the lunchbox stuff.

Any chance this will happen anytime soon?

Isn't the gotcha that the routing and busing and such has to be part of the frame? That would probably complicate things and keep it from being practical to deliver a $2000 frame. A console is really more than just some modules plugged into a back plane, if it's going to be scaleable anyway.

An empty API 1608 is almost $20K, right?

it's about to be 2010. any "future" consoles at this point should have total recall & and DAW control.

That's a lovely sentiment, but to actually implement that even with todays technology is REALLY cost prohibitive.
I believe the fore runner of the 500 series is the Mark VIII. Versatile, sturdy and sonically perfect, I think the Mark VIII's that I've been beta testing, are really outstanding.

At least the recall like on ssl x-racks. no automation, daw control could even go but some sort of recall should be there even as an option.

That console is not very exciting looking. I really like the colored module look and cool big knobs at the bottom from the prototype. The silver, large dented e.q. knobs look great though. Add this to a white console, (Yes, WHITE) and you'd have a United Colors of Benetton design for audio people....... work of art. I'd even save up to own. No recall neccessary.
Really, the look of that prototype really caught my eye.

I can't wait to see grey and black go away for gear colors, seems so bland. I think those api lunchbox colors look GREAT, that should be the design focus of this idea for sure. Really, that red, blue, and white look fantastic together........ installed in a white console with green LED meters lights.................

Still, it could cost you $16K to $20K or more to load it up with 500 modules.
